When thinking of a logo for our company much thought went into it.
To me the rainbow is a sign of many things and two of those things are love and hope.
To those of us who have a special person in our lives or perhaps we are that special person. ASD (Autism) is not a deficit and instead is simply a different way the mind works (neuro divergent) to those who don't have autism (neuro typical).
One of the ways that people with Autism. Can be seen to have minds that work differently is in the area of communication.
It is very important to us to understand. So that we can explain to those around us how communication can best occur.
A breakdown in communication can happen when neuro typical people are using sarcasm. This can cause an issue if they are communicating in a way that isn't factual in what they are saying. It's much easier in communication to use facts or explain what is meant clearly to a person with Autism.
At times people with Autism will speak and sound different to a neuro typical person. This could be that they speak to quickly, loud, soft or flat in their tone.
At times people with Autism might ask the same the question more than once. This might look like "Where are we going for dinner?". It may not be using the same words and it can be a way of stimming. Stimming for an Autistic (ASD) person is soothing.
A way of communication that some Autistic people use is called Echolalia. This means that it can look like repeated scripted conversations, phrases or a noise.
A common way that people communicate in society is through body language. For people with Autism this can be particularly tricky. In western society, using eye contact is a sign of attentiveness when communicating with others. However for Autistic people this is often very uncomfortable and can be a major barrier to communication.
All ASD (Autistic) people are different and this means that some or all of these things will apply to them. However sometimes there might be very minimal signs of these things or they may not apply to them in these ways.
Our society currently work on ways to assist those in the community who are Autistic or Neuro divergent to change to be more like Neuro typical people.
It is truly my hope that in the future. That society will see the differences that we have, aren't something to be fixed but instead are something to be cherished 🌈
