Life can get busy, and itโ€™s easy to feel tired, tense, or mentally overwhelmed.
When the mind is under pressure, the body holds onto that stress, showing up as tightness, stiffness, pain, aches, tiredness/low energy and a general feeling of being out of balance.

Mindfulness is ultimately about learning to relate to ourselves and our experiences, may they be pleasant, unpleasant or neutral; with kindness, compassion and acceptance.
Its about how we connect to and receive each moment as it arises.
Whatever is here before us, we see through the eyes of awareness and we practice gentle non-reaction.

And we practice compassion.
Compassion for ourselves and rippling outwards towards others.
Pausing to take a deep breath, inhaling and exhaling. Stepping out of the habitual state of ruminating, anticipating, wanting, analysing, complaining, comparing and judging..... checking in with ourselves.

What is my relationship with this now moment?
What is really going on here?
How is my breath?
How does does my body feel?
Am I moving too quickly?
Am I holding on too tightly?
Can I lighten the grip a little?

With clearer seeing of how we are, we move on, one step at a time, mindfully, intelligently, gradually and lightly.

This moment right here and right now, is ours for the taking.

In my years of Massage Therapy, sore & tight Trapezius muscles are by far the most common complaint I hear (mine included!)

So a bit of background information about this hard working muscle coming your way!

The trapezius muscle is a large, triangular muscle located in the upper back and shoulders. It runs from the base of the skull to the middle of the back and is responsible for supporting and stabilizing the neck, shoulders, and arms.
Pain in this area can be caused by strain or tension due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or stress. Fortunately, massage can be an effective way to alleviate pain associated with trapezius strain.

Trapezius strain & pain occurs when the muscles are overstretched or overused. Poor posture habits such as slouching or hunching your shoulders can cause strain on your trapezius muscle, having a pulling, straining effect on them for many hours each day. In effect the back body gets abnormally and painfully longer, while the front body becomes abnormally and painfully shorter.

Repetitive motions such as lifting heavy objects or typing on a computer can also contribute to strain on this muscle group. Additionally, psychological stress can cause tension in your trapezius muscles. This can result in pain that radiates from your neck down through your shoulder blades and arms.

Massage works well by applying pressure to targeted areas in order to relax tight muscles and increase blood flow to reduce inflammation. Massage therapy will reduce pain associated with trapezius strain as well as improve mobility in those affected areas. Additionally, massage encourages relaxation which helps reduce stress levels and tension built up in the trapezius muscle group.

Targeted stretching of the muscle group can be effective in relieving tightness of the Trap, with the addition of exercise and a well balanced lifestyle.

A Simple Meditative Practice

As you will know, if you have ever tried to meditate, the mind is constantly being pulled away from this present now moment by all myriad of things - physical sensations, thoughts and thinking in the mind, emotional disturbance and more.
Often people don't even try to meditate for fear it's just too hard, or try once or twice and give up, becoming lost, distracted and discouraged.

Mostly, I find however, it is the unspoken fear of simply sitting with ourselves without ANY kind of distraction.
It has become almost unbearable in this day and age to not reach for distraction the very instant we awake.

In short, we are faced with our s**t - front and centre, and it's incredibly difficult to look at the s**t pile of our selves and our lives clearly, let alone stay with it for any length of time and allow it to reveal it's hidden gems.

So what if as a start point, and as a gentle practice, become still and quiet for a few minutes each day, and just in a very simple way, pay attention to the sounds you can hear all around you in that now moment.
Let go of ANY judgement about the sounds as they continue to stream through, you just keep coming back and paying attention to the sounds.
Sounds in the near distance, the middle distance and the far distance....just allow the very truth of them to be there, and you hearing them.
Don't be interested in how well you are staying with the sounds, rather, be interested in how well you keep coming back to them.

The Wonder of Fascia - Our body is a miracle ๐Ÿ’ซ

When I went through my massage training, it was taught that fascia is a kind of filler material with little significance beyond holding things in place.
Now through the work of scientists, fascia revealed itself not as inert wrapping, but as living, responsive tissue deeply integrated with the nervous system. Under the microscope, fascia appeared less like packing material and more like a finely tuned communication network.

Rather than sitting neatly around muscles, fascia behaves more like a three-dimensional spiderweb or a continuous fabric woven throughout the body. Tug on one corner, and the tension is felt elsewhere. Stretch one area and the entire system responds.
Fascia blends into muscle fibres, connects across joints, and wraps organs, transmitting force, sensation, and information in every direction.
When emotional stress or trauma occurs, fascia adapts alongside the nervous system. These changes are intelligent, protective responses shaped by survival, even when they persist long after the original danger has passed.

Working with fascia is like learning the language of a living landscape. Touch becomes a conversation rather than a command. Pressure is an invitation, not a demand. When safety is present, fascia responds the way frozen ground responds to spring, slowly thawing, rehydrating, and allowing movement where there was once rigidity.
Breath deepens, awareness settles, and patterns that felt permanent begin to loosen.

The body is not a machine padded with filler. It is a living system of extraordinary intelligence, where structure, sensation, and emotion are woven together like threads in a tapestry.
When we honour this, healing shifts from fixing something broken to supporting something profoundly wise.
Given the right conditions, the body does not need to be forced to change. It already knows how to soften, adapt, and return toward balance ๐Ÿ’ฎ
