Welcome to the Team – Jess Bingham, Social Worker

Based in Brisbane North, Jess brings a wealth of experience in community mental health, behaviour support and NDIS specialist support coordination. She has worked with both adults and young people, and is deeply passionate about understanding, advocating, and walking alongside those experiencing complex mental health challenges.

Jess holds a Master of Social Work and a Bachelor of Psychological Science—and she’s especially skilled in working with people with complex trauma and personality disorders.

👩‍🍳 Outside of work, Jess is a qualified chef and a keen baker. When she’s not supporting others, you’ll find her in the kitchen cooking up a storm for her partner and two Staffies—or relaxing at the beach (a nod to her WA roots).

🌿 Slowing Down to Reconnect

Amid the constant noise of daily life, we took a step back to embrace stillness. A few members of our team, along with some wonderful colleagues in the mental health space, spent a day immersed in a silent retreat in the Gold Coast hinterland—an experience of mindfulness, reflection, and deep presence.

Guided by Jawai from Innate Thriving, we moved through yoga, mindful eating, a rainforest walk, and quiet contemplation, each moment reminding us of the power of simply being.

As mental health professionals, we hold space for others every day—but this retreat reminded us of the importance of holding space for ourselves. In stillness, we found clarity. In silence, we found connection.

Grateful for this deeply restorative experience.

How good are these swings at a café in Brighton? ☕🌿

They’re not just fun—they’re also a great reminder of how movement can impact our nervous system.

As occupational therapists, we often see how movement helps with emotion regulation. For some people, staying still and talking can feel overwhelming. But shifting the environment—introducing gentle movement, like sitting on a swing, walking, or stretching—can make all the difference in focus and engagement.

Different types of movement have different effects. Forward and back can feel soothing and rhythmic, while side-to-side might be more stabilising or alerting. These small adjustments can help regulate the nervous system, making it easier to connect, communicate, and feel at ease.

Seeing these swings was a great reminder of how simple yet powerful movement can be in supporting mental health.

As the year draws to a close, a small group of us took some time to unwind and recharge with a getaway on Tamborine Mountain. From swimming in the refreshing waters of Cedar Creek to staying up late playing board games and sharing plenty of laughs, it was a chance to reconnect and reflect on the incredible journey we've had this year.

The highlight? Sitting together at the top of the mountain, watching the sun set over the horizon – a moment of calm and gratitude for all that 2024 has brought us.

To our clients, supporters, and partners: thank you for being a part of our year. We’re heading into the festive season with full hearts and a renewed sense of purpose. Here’s to ending the year strong and welcoming the new one with open arms! ❤️

As we approach the end of the year, we wanted to inform you that Do It With Purpose Occupational Therapy will be closed for the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Our office will be closed from Friday 20th December and will reopen on Monday, 6th January 2025.

During this time, our team will be taking a well-deserved break to rest and recharge for an exciting year ahead. We encourage you to plan any ongoing services or support needs around these dates.

If you have any urgent matters, please reach out to us before our closure, and we’ll do our best to assist.

We are thrilled to welcome Caroline Phillips to the team, now providing services on the Sunshine Coast!

Caroline brings almost 15 years of expertise in mental health occupational therapy, having worked across community and inpatient settings in Queensland and Western Australia. Caroline is passionate about helping adults experiencing mental health challenges, including anxiety, mood disorders, emotional dysregulation, trauma, and psychosis.

Caroline works collaboratively with her clients to optimise their daily functioning, focusing on improving routines, sleep, thinking patterns, and coping skills. She’s dedicated to supporting people in achieving their personalised recovery goals, whether it’s through building meaningful connections, exploring hobbies, or honing essential life skills.

When she’s not helping others, Caroline enjoys spending time with her young family, going to the beach, cooking, travelling, and exploring her creative side through art.

This October, we come together to recognise Mental Health Month—a time to shine a light on the importance of mental well-being, support those struggling, and foster conversations about mental health.

Mental health is something we all experience differently, and it’s okay to talk about it. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, depression, or simply feeling overwhelmed, your mental health matters just as much as your physical health.

This month, let’s
💬 Check in with ourselves and others – Ask “Are you really okay?” and be there to listen.
💙 Challenge stigma – Mental health is nothing to be ashamed of. Let’s break down the barriers and support each other with empathy.
🌿 Take time for self-care – Whether it’s a walk in nature, journaling, or reaching out to a friend, small acts of care can make a difference.

Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you or someone you know needs support, there are resources available to help navigate the journey to better mental health.
