We have a few weeks left until the new magazine goes live. I have had a few spots open up if anyone would like to contribute an article or talk about a community space/event, please dm me.

July's issue has been set, and the articles are in motion.

"The strength that encapsulates an individual in trying times is one that cannot be easily determined.
The surface is tough, seemingly unbreakable.
The inside, unbearable."

Inspired by the many conversations we as a family have had with ex serving veterans and their families. No matter the experiences they have had, their strength and unwavering support through the s**t show that can sometimes be unbearable is incredible.

It's free
It's digital (for now)
It's independently owned

The issue will be released inside our group Life & Defence Magazine to avoid the emails getting lost or me having to sign up to an individual platform.

We took our boys in for the ANZAC Day March this year so they could watch dad and see what the whole day is really about. They had an absolute ball and kept saying it was the 'best day ever' because they were included in what can often feel like something just dad does on his own.

I know there are a lot of family friendly squadrons and we are incredibly lucky to be part of one, but I am also not ignorant to the fact there are many that are not. I can't help but feel a bit helpless for those families that feel a bit pushed to the side.

Is there anything that would help those feeling pushed to the side feel more included? Is it something only the sqn can do or as a community can we take action?
(happy for the conversation to enter my dm's if you're not comfortable in a public space)

Do you agree?

This is part of a study that was done a while ago (2010), personally I think it’s still relevant. Especially when discussing it with others.

The other responses were
13% it would harm my career
18% there would be difficulty getting time off work for an appointment
10% I don’t know where to get help

We needed a step back!

After a few months of navigating mental health, physical health and massive decisions that have affected every single member of our family, I needed to step back.

It’s beven a massive journey this year and I appreciate your patience with the magazines holt.

Amidst the reflection and growth that has happened, so have many other things. If you are on our subscription list you can read all the details in our email out now.

As we look to the new year, there are some HUGE changes happening around here. Some that needed to happen, some that brings us back to why we started and some that have grown to be important as we have navigated this year.

The details will be released in the new year (check your emails 😉).

Until then I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your understanding and support. I am looking forward to the upcoming year and the positive changes it will bring to family base. Stay tuned for more updates, and here’s to a new chapter filled with inspiration, resilience and growth.

One of the most asked questions I get is what do I say to my friend who is struggling?

This is either as messages or face to face, but I do want to stress that if the conversation changes from 'I'm struggling' to 'I'm not ok' it's important to reach out to the appropriate people. In some instances this might be the CoC and others it might be Open Arms. Calls for help can come in funny ways, but if you are replaying the conversation in your head because it is concerning, then it is enough to take it further. Trust your instincts.

I feel like disappointment is just a part of Defence life sometimes, and as easy as it is to just sit in it and be pi**ed off, here are some quick tactics to try and shift it.

Behind the scenes advocacy is probably one of the biggest parts of how this magazine has evolved. During the weeks I make phone calls to businesses, have meetings with well known organisations and send emails outlining why things need to change.

In the last few months its been very quiet but we have managed to get in front of some representatives from the Royal Commission, setting the ground work for a follow up conversation about the flow on effect the 'military way' has on families.

The difference with how I go about advocating is my access to information. With my background knowledge in psychology and access to restricted studies, I am able to not only voice my opinion but back it up with science and stats.

There are a few other things in the pipeline that I'd love to tackle as the year comes to an end, but I'll let you know as they happen.
