Take everything I say here ….with a grain of salt, BUT
šŸ‘‰ SIBO healing can (and should) include SOME fibre in the diet, AFTER your symptoms have stabilised. Your microbiome depends on it. But take it easy. When I say take it easy ….start with very small amounts of your chosen fibre to begin with.

Not all SIBO is the same. Not everyone will react to fibre in the same way. It’s important to work out what foods YOUR SIBO can tolerate and what that tolerance limit is.

🤰Methanogen overgrowth - IMO/CMO/SIBO-M. If your SIBO is purely methanogen based ….you will likely find that you handle fibre much better than any other SIBO group. Experimenting with flaxseed meal, chia seeds and even psyllium husks will likely pay dividends for SIBO healing and for getting those slow bowels moving.
āž” You still need to start with small amounts and gently build to your tolerance limits.

🤰Classic SIBO/SIBO-H/Hydrogen Sulphide SIBO/Mixed Types - you guys can be a little more sensitive to fibre and you need to be VERY careful. Waiting until you are at the stage of food re-introductions (or Phase 2 Biphasic Diet) will be important and you may even need a little longer than that to ensure that your gut is stable.

If you’re following BiPhasic diet, you’ll notice that some of these foods are not included in your protocol but they ARE if you’re following Low FODMAP. I try to move clients through biphasic diet, to low FODMAP as quickly as possible for the sake of your microbiome. All of these foods are worth a try if your symptoms are stable.

If you’re feeling stuck with your SIBO healing or you haven’t even started yet ….it’s time to HIT THE BOOKING LINK in my Bio.

SIBO peeps ….I have not forgotten you. I know fibre ā€˜can be’ your nemesis. So let’s look a little closer at whether more fibre is always best.

When you have SIBO, you have a whole living, thriving microbial population high up in your small intestine …they’re šŸ›‘ supposed to be there in those numbers.

Yes, there is a ā€˜normal’ amount of bacteria that CAN live in the small intestine without causing any problems. The problems come when this population hits critical mass and starts feasting on chyme (creepy kinda word meaning partially broken down food from the stomach).

Normally, that chyme is further broken down by brush border enzymes of the small intestine and the simple sugars (from carbohydrates), vitamins, minerals, proteins etc are absorbed into the bloodstream. The leftover fibres THEN go to the large intestine when they feed the microbiota of the large intestine.

SIBO isn’t normal. The presence of this critical mass population means that they have immediate access to undigested carbohydrates entering from the stomach. This is party food šŸŽ‰. And microbial parties mean LOTS OF GAS šŸ™Š (aka bloating)
So ….is more fibre the answer for everyone?
šŸ‘‰No. BUT, you still need fibre, even if you have SIBO. The trick is to work out which fibres you can tolerate and your tolerance limits.
šŸ‘‰Is that the end? Again …No. Your tolerance of fibre improves as you treat your SIBO and heal the lining of your gut.

If you’ve hit a wall with your SIBO healing and have no idea how to heal enough to include fibre, it’s time to BOOK IN.
šŸ‘‰I have just 5 New Patient appointments left for 2025.

My photos are s**t but these rolls are awesome šŸ˜‚

Here are the promised 'Seed Rolls' for all of your high fibre cheating. The recipe is a Pete Evans recipe (yes, I did ask permission about 10 years ago). He called it 'Nut Free Paleo Rolls ...but I'm all about being obvious and efficient, so seeds it is.

I make a double batch of the dry ingredients and store half in the fridge for the next batch (see ....TIME EFFICIENCY!). The next time I want a batch, all I have to do is mix in the wet ingredients and b**g them in the oven. šŸ’„BOOMšŸ’„

Each roll (if you make 9) contains 13.9g fibre. Trust me ....that's a LOT. You can use them daily or like I do ....as cheats for those super busy days when I'm not able to focus on creating a delicious, high fibre meals (aka I'm sick of my kid whinging about all these new recipes with friggen beans in them🄓).

Enjoy and think of how much you love Pete while munching on them ....and don 't come at me if you don't love him ....I don't really care LOL.

If you're one of my clients, you may already have this recipe. Feel free to share your love for them below!

I hear you …what ridiculous fruit is she eating now? šŸ˜‚
Today I’m finishing off my latest farmer’s market score …Grumachama Cherry from

The Grumichama is a Brazilian fruit FULL TO THE BRIM with polyphenols. But the polyphenol I’m most interested in is ellagitannins (like I talked about in the jaboticaba post a couple of weeks ago).

Certain microbes convert ellagitannins to Urolithin A which is a powerful anti inflammatory and anti cancer compound.

These cherries are delicious and sweet with a very slight ā€˜clove’ after taste from the skin.

They grow in tropical and subtropical environments …and yes, I have a baby growing in my garden. .

There’s always 1 black sheep šŸ‘ of the ….phyla?! Despite being a member of Bacteroidetes/Bacteroidota phylum ….this guy doesn’t respond to the same ā€˜things’ as other members of this phyla.

You guys asked ā€˜What is Alistipes?’ so here we are.

I’ve been seeing this at elevated levels in quite a few clients recently. And given my current push to increase fibre in the diet, it’s a great time to take a closer look at it. Because honestly ….there’s only a few key things that can reduce the levels of this little bu**er. (check out the slides)

If you have bowel cancer in your family ….you definitely want to make sure that your Alistipes levels are optimal. There are others too but that’s for another day.

If you want to check your Alistipes levels (and check your whole microbiome is functioning correctly), you’ll need a test kit. Either reply ALISTIPES (and I will personally be in contact with you ….not a chatbot) or if you like your privacy (like me), send me a DM and I’ll order it for you.

Hold on to your smashed avo, people.

Still droning on about fibre but last week YOU told me you wanted to learn how to get fibre in the diet.

1 x Seed Roll = 13.8g
1/4 x large Avocado = 4.1g

šŸ’„ BOOM šŸ’„ (walks away, dusting off hands).

I dare you to try to get that much fibre out of your average garden salad. ….I’m not saying don’t eat salad!!! Yes, salad is good but you need more if you’re going to hit your fibre needs.

And sometimes your day is cray cray …and you need some workable, whole food CHEATS.

Enter the seed roll. I haven’t shared that recipe yet but I promise it’s coming. .

Ahhhh the big, hard TRUTH.

Basically this reel is my whole caption …you’re welcome.

I’m letting you into my whirlpool of fibre thoughts (good luck in here! weeeeeeeeeee).

But seriously …this is the revelations, the shocking truths (mine …yay!) and what I’m doing to make it easier for all of you.

Re-entry from Rome …..my brain hurts. But my gut is GREAT!
I know I’ve been back for WEEKS, but I've honestly been processing the conference DAILY since I got home.
Obsessively ….and it’s not just the nuts + bolts (pun intended šŸ˜‰) of 1 lecture or another. It’s a combo of lectures, discussions with ā€˜the Aussie contingent’ and then following a colleague taking her son through a very interesting FMT in Northern Spain. There’s layers upon layers of context for me that sent me down a huge rabbit WARREN.

Here’s the backstory to slide 3:
→ A PNG Study showed a fibre intake of 45 g/day, with westerners only getting 15-20g/day.
→ Food in Italy was AMAZING …and then the stark contrast of the ABSOLUTE GARBAGE FOOD that was on offer at the conference ….which highlighted how a country known for the Mediterranean Diet is also not immune to the industrialisation of its food. Honestly …garbage was being kind.
→ ā€˜The FMT’ - the donor had 500+ species of microbes in their stool!!!! FIVE HUNDRED. The highest I’ve seen in my clinic was just over 300 and my own is only 274.
Guys! THE POTENTIAL OUR MICROBIOME HAS TO GROW …my mind is in a spin. And the FMT process required this mum to literally ā€˜process’ the p**p herself (..you seeing this kids??) but her observations during this process keep playing in my mind:
šŸ‘‰there was ZERO smell ….ZERO.
šŸ‘‰She could SEE the fibre in the stool
šŸ‘‰The stool was enormous
šŸ‘‰And the results with her son were immediate.

I know I’m a bit weird (my 12yo loves to remind me) but does this have any of your minds spinning like mine is??

Next post - what I’ve been doing to work out what our food should look like to be reaching this level ….so you don’t have to.

Olive leaf tea drama queens (myself included šŸ‘øšŸ¼) …the solution!
Ok we’ve established that despite her wondrous results …she’s BITTER AF. So I kept playing around with it.

Here’s what you need to do:
1ļøāƒ£ Make the yea following study guidelines. 2 flat teaspoons of olive leaf powder, boiling water, infuse 7-10 mins. BUT ….only pour over 90-100 ml of boiling water. It’s more intense but less to get down.
2ļøāƒ£AFTER infusion, add a whole ice cube of fresh lemon juice (yes, go buy some lemons, juice them and freeze the juice in an ice cube tray)
3ļøāƒ£ Enjoy! Seriously …enjoy. It’s nice now šŸ˜‚

This is something that can’t be ignored. 10000 women have joined this class action.

If you’ve used Depo-Provera in the past, this is something that you need to be aware of.

Who knew swapping cow s**t, feta and bacon for a few tomatoes would lead to this?!

Italy taught me a lot. Not just the conference either …although it’s featuring here more than you’d know.

I visited a friend’s farm today to collect fresh p**py doo for my garden and I took him a bucket of tomatoes. When I returned from shovelling šŸ’©, he handed me some bacon (from his piggies), a bucket of fresh milk and his home made feta ….And BOOM šŸ’„ …it took me straight back to Italy. All this sharing of food and resources, slowing down to lovingly prepare a meal. Eating slowly (with a book!) instead of rushing to the next task.

Now for the conference learning:

-my biggest take home message was FIBRE. Traditional societies typically eat 40+g of fibre every single day. The western diet is lucky to reach 15g.
-so then I checked in on my fibre intake (thinking I’d be close to 40g) ….25g! WTF??? I have some work to do (my lunch).
-my other take home that was related to fibre …that it’s WHOLE foods that feed the microbiome best. Isolated prebiotics and fancy pro and postbiotics have a therapeutic benefit but the real gold is the food you eat Every. Single. Day.

I’m going to be yarpin’ on about fibre a lot now. Stay tuned!

Local farmer’s market delivering the magic this morning. Thank you for these delicious microbiome feeding Jaboticaba! You honestly made my day.

Jaboticaba contain the HIGHEST level of ellagitannins found in any fruit. They feed some very special bacteria in the microbiome that turn the ellagitannins into urolithin A …a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer compound.

I’m going to eat these until David runs out of them ….while IMPATIENTLY waiting for this ridiculously slow growing tree in my garden to gift me some more.
