International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations observed day held on
3 December each year to increase public awareness, understanding and
acceptance of people with disability.

The theme for IDPwD 2023 is ‘United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.’

Previous research has indicated that dance therapy is thought to improve mental and physical health by activating physiological and psychological processes such as expression of emotion and motor coordination. Some currently used mind–body interventions for post-traumatic symptoms address both mental and physical health.

The purpose of this article was to identify the effects of dance therapy in adults with psychological trauma, in addition to any barriers and facilitators associated with its therapeutic use.

Authors selected articles that were published between 2000 and March of 2023 from seven different databases.

The articles results concluded that dance therapy could be a useful strategy to improve both physiological and psychological symptoms associated with trauma exposure, such as dissociative and avoidance phenomena.

It has also been recommended that further quantitative and qualitative research on the impact of dance therapy interventions as a trauma treatment should be conducted.

Did you know that self-care doesn't necessarily have to be an action that you take? It can be cutting habits out of your life that are not serving you in a positive way, in order to free some space to do the things that matter most to you!

Next time you get to the end of a draining day, take a few moments to reflect on the following questions:
- What dragged you down today?
- How can you do less of that?

Then physically write down a 'don't-do' list to serve as a reminder to keep you accountable.

This won't be something that you can do perfectly the first time, but continue to make adjustments until you reach a point where you are doing more things that fill your cup and give you more energy.

If you are interested in doing a reflection exercise on identity, Therapist Aid has created a free 'Pictures of Me' tool to use.

"Identity is how you think about, describe, and present yourself. An identity might include sister, student, animal lover, athlete, and kind person. Understanding your identity can provide meaning and direction in life."

How do you complete the activity?

On the worksheet there are four picture frames. In each frame, you are instructed to write in a part of your identity and draw what each one means to you. For example, you may choose to draw yourself exactly how you see yourself, or maybe objects you use in this role, or any symbols that may be associated with this particular part of your identity.

As we are approaching the final months of the working year it's important to check-in on our own levels of workplace-related stress.

First of all, how is workplace stress defined?

The World Health Organisation defines it as 'the response people may have when presented with work demands and pressures that are not matched to their knowledge and abilities and which challenge their ability to cope.'

What are some factors that can contribute to workplace stress?

- Job insecurity
- High demand tasks
- Lack of support from colleagues and supervisors
- Feeling out of place
- Discrimination - gender, s*xuality, race, ethnicity
- Poor work organisation, the structure of work systems and how they are managed
- Poor management and leadership

Why is it important to have workplace mental health and work-life balance?

Stress is commonly associated with anxiety and depression, and physical disorders like hypertension and diabetes. One study highlighted that ‘work stress appears to precipitate diagnosable depression and anxiety in previously healthy young workers’. One way of reducing the impacts of workplace stress requires employers to recognise and create meaningful practices to create a steady balance for staff. They can also implement the same duty of care and enforcement as is expected for mitigating physical health risks in the workplace.

Work demands such as meeting deadlines, striving to get a competitive edge, or the desire to exceed expectations can sometimes mean achieving this balance is incredibly difficult. Nonetheless, it is the responsibility of leaders in the workplace to implement healthy initiatives for staff.

PANDA created Perinatal Mental Health Week in 2005 to help the community and health professionals to better understand perinatal mental health.

PANDA's Community Champions, Clinical Champions, staff, volunteers and online community have worked hard to raise awareness for perinatal mental health.

Each year the community shares their stories to help achieve PANDA's vision of a society where perinatal mental health is valued and understood and where stigma and systemic barriers to seeking help no longer exist.

The theme for 2023 is 'Connection Through Conversation'.

The pandemic has induced long-lasting effects on an individual's physical and psychological health, especially for children and adolescents. Previous research has indicated that children's anxiety symptoms may have so much as double during the COVID-19 period, which then brings negative downstream developmental consequences to children and adolescents.

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) was appropriate for use with children and adolescents during the pandemic as it involves less emphasis cognitive abilities, loading or functioning.

A randomised clinical trial was conducted investigating the efficacy of an online solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) for adolescents' anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 period.

Eligible participants' ages ranged from 11 and 18 years old and scored a 10 or higher on the Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7).

The researchers found that compared to the adolescents who did not receive any treatment, the intervention resulted in a significant reduction of anxiety and depressive symptoms for adolescents, while also promoting problem oriented coping strategies at immediate post-intervention.
