Looking forward to speaking at the Barry Nilsson Health Forum tonight. It will be attended by key stakeholders in the provision of care for people with chronic pain, inparticular Low Back.

Low Back pain is one of the leading causes of chronic pain and disability in Australia and globally.

My messages will be clear:

Pain is a Functional condition - treating it with Structural Interventions will ultimately fail.

Our Rehabilition Industry needs to be more accountable for treatment outcomes.

Effectively cure back pain symptoms by treating Functional root causation.

The end result - Empty waiting rooms for spine surgeons and pain physicians.

Treating medical specialists should be more actively involved in the physical rehabilitation delivered to their patients suffering from Low Back Pain.

If you're simply advised "do more physio" then ask what does that mean, what are the therapeutic goals, what time frame is expected and what are the recognised objective outcomes?

Currently back pain is a leading cause of disability in Australia. The back pain therapeutic industry is failing. It's failing because these questions are not being meaningfully answered.

This paper highlights how important the Multifidus Muscle is, along with Neutral Spine, Hip-Centric inclination. ie Movement Proficiency.
The factors associated with the wildly favourable outcomes that go along with Multifidus Muscle functional restoration also destroys the counter narrative that there are "no bad movements" and that default intra-lumbar flexion is ok. The beliefs of the Movement Optimist Camp and the existing back pain rehabilitation guidelines that entirely ignore Multifidus Function only serve to maintain the LBP epidemic.
Time to step aside, show some humility and allow Functional Movement Therapy to cure the condition of Low Back Pain.
