CHANGING PROBIOTIC PARADIGMS
Probiotic Myths & Misconceptions
Sensational headlines and ‘fake news’ are nothing new; but, recently probiotics came into the firing line. Headlines, such as ‘Probiotics labelled “quite useless”’ have hit internet sites and news broadcasts.
BUT the research which is based on a trial of 15 people, generalised findings from one generic non-researched multi-strain probiotic, ignored the fact that specific probiotic strains are for specific purposes, and did not assess any actual clinical outcomes.
The International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics has responded that ‘Without clinical evidence, it is not possible to conclude about the tested probiotic’s usefulness, and it is certainly not possible to conclude about probiotic usefulness in general.’
The landscape of probiotic research and understanding is changing rapidly, and we need to follow and keep up with the latest quality research and understand fully how we need to follow the real science, not the misinformation.
