🏃♂️ Understanding Cam Morphology
Cam morphology is an aspherical shape of the femoral head that can alter hip mechanics. It typically develops during adolescence in response to high physical loads, especially in “hip-heavy” sports like football, hockey, or soccer. Active males are most commonly affected.
Clinically, cam morphology is a major contributor to femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and can increase the risk of hip osteoarthritis (OA) later in life. However, only about 6–25% of people with cam morphology go on to develop OA — highlighting that other factors, including joint mechanics, activity levels, and genetics, play a role.
Early recognition can help guide monitoring, management strategies, and patient education, particularly for young athletes at risk.
