Feeling “too sensitive”?

When strong emotions meet a harsh inner critic, we get stuck in the cycle of emotional vulnerability ↔ self-invalidation.

Instead of shrinking your pain, self-criticism makes it louder.

DBT teaches:

Recover from self-invalidation with self-validation

Use dialectical thinking — hold two truths at once

Treat sensitivity as a strength, not a flaw

Try this: Next time you think, “I shouldn’t feel this way,” reframe it as “Given my history, it makes sense I feel this.”

MEET THE THERAPISTS

Hi, I’m Megha.
I am a student social worker currently completing my placement at Wise-Mind DBT Brisbane as part of my Master of Social Work at the University of Queensland. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow here and have found myself particularly drawn to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for its structured and practical approach to supporting emotional wellbeing. I’ve personally connected with these skills and found them genuinely beneficial.

My path into social work has been guided by a desire to do social service, raise cultural awareness, and promote social justice. Before moving to Australia, I volunteered at Anweshi Women’s Counselling Centre in Kerala, India, where I supported women in crisis, assisted with case investigations, and helped coordinate community-based programs. I also contributed to training initiatives such as a certificate course on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act and was involved in reporting and digital library management.

Prior to entering the social work field, I worked for three years as a Journalist at a leading online news platform, focusing on stories that amplified the voices of marginalised communities. My work included video features that contributed to real social change.

I value deep listening and responding with empathy, approach my work with cultural sensitivity, and bring a calm, grounded presence to my role. My goal is to walk alongside people with respect, curiosity, and compassion by offering support, resources, and care that align with their needs.

Away from work and study, I enjoy embracing a slow pace of life, watching feel-good films, cooking comforting meals that remind me of home, and strolling through beautiful scenic places.

MEET THE THERAPISTS

Hi there, my name is Jacob. I’m a therapist who values compassion, curiosity, and connection—and I work to create a space where you can show up just as you are.

I’m an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with experience across a range of mental health settings, including acute care, community mental health, and specialist forensic services, treating both individual clients and facilitating group psychotherapy sessions. This breadth of experience has shaped my flexible, trauma-informed approach and deepened my understanding of the complex ways mental health challenges can show up in people’s lives.

In my clinical practice, I have supported clients with a wide range of mental health challenges, and I have notable experience working with people with borderline personality disorder, complex PTSD, and conditions affecting mood and emotion.

I draw on evidence-based modalities, including Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to support insight, resilience, and meaningful change. It is through these modalities that I aim to help people connect to their values, set behavioural goals, and develop effective tools and coping strategies to navigate life’s challenges with poise and less resistance.

Whatever it is that you are navigating, rest assured we’ll work together to explore what matters most to you—with care, humour, and humanity.

Outside the therapy room, you’ll most likely find me surfing, camping, or cooking with way too much chilli—anything that brings a bit of adventure and flavour to life.

MEET THE THERAPISTS

Jean is an Accredited Social Worker and DBT Therapist with 15 years of clinical experience, specialising in Borderline Personality Disorder, Complex PTSD, and other complex mental health presentations. She has undertaken advanced training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT), and trauma-informed practice. Jean is currently completing further postgraduate study in Sexology, a field that informs and deepens her practice by expanding her understanding of identity, sexuality, and relational wellbeing. Her work is grounded in evidence-based, trauma-informed, and gender-affirming approaches that honour the complexity and dignity of each individual.

PLEASE NOTE: As Clinical Director of Wise-Mind DBT Brisbane, Jean spends much of her time working directly with complex referrals. She primarily supports individuals with high-risk presentations who may benefit from structured, skills-based interventions and longer-term therapeutic engagement.

Before founding Wise-Mind DBT Brisbane, Jean worked across community, mental health, and forensic settings, supporting people experiencing suicidality, substance use, and significant relational trauma. She has always been drawn to work that requires both clinical depth and human connection.

Jean loves this work because it allows her to witness people reclaim their stories, their voice, and their lives. She is especially passionate about supporting clients who have felt misunderstood or marginalised in mental health systems. Outside of therapy, you’ll find her reading q***r theory, watering her plants, or wandering through second-hand bookstores.

Jean draws from DBT, RO-DBT, Attachment theory, Sexological frameworks, and Harm Reduction principles.

Her practice is shaped by an intersectional awareness of how trauma, identity, and systemic forces interact, and by a commitment to offering compassionate, affirming, and practical care.

In moments of intense distress, your body’s fight-or-flight response can make it feel impossible to think clearly. That’s where Paced Breathing, part of the TIPP skill in DBT, comes in.

By deliberately slowing your breath—breathing in for four counts and out for six to eight counts—you signal to your nervous system that you are safe. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to reduce anxiety, lower heart rate, and bring a sense of calm.

Just like the quote in this image says: "It's a fight, but it's life too, you have to breathe." When emotions feel overwhelming, pause, breathe with intention, and give yourself space to respond, not react.

Try it now: Take a slow inhale… hold… and exhale even slower. How do you feel? Let me know in the comments!
