Next time your children are complaining about helping out around the house, just remind yourself that being involved in day to day jobs at home is an important part of developing independence but also helps develop skills in problem solving, fine and gross motor coordination. Here are some examples of jobs around the house that are appropriate for school age children, that not only help with the smooth running of the family but also aid in your child’s development - make their bed, sort and fold laundry, vacuum, sweep, dust, set and clear the dinner table, unload dishwasher and help make their lunches.

A child’s foundation to growth, development and learning starts with sensory and motor interaction with the world. Sensory motor activities engage and strengthen the body and brain by activating our body and our senses at the same time. Sensory motor skills are important to be able to join in day to day routines and activities.

Great Ways to Grow Sensory Motor Activity Cards are the perfect 'how to' tool to develop sensory motor skills amongst the kids in your lives. Ready to support sensory motor development in your classroom, clinic, or home?

Sometimes children complain of tired or sore hands when writing because they are squeezing their pencil too hard and/or pressing too hard on the page. Children use extra force in an attempt to increase control of the pencil, when they do not have the necessary strength and control in the small muscles of their fingers and hands. Try some of the following activities to help develop fine motor strength and control, marbles, playdough, stamps and ink pad, peg and tweezer games, construction sets
