The word 'orange' was originally 'norange'. Because we could say 'a norange', it gradually lost the 'n' and we could eventually say 'an orange'. That's why it's still naranja in Spanish.

This is a classic case of rebracketing (or misdivision). English borrowed the word from Arabic nāranj → Spanish naranja. But when it entered English, people often said “a norange.” Over time, the boundary shifted: a norange was reinterpreted as “an orange.”

The n didn’t disappear; it just jumped ships.

Meanwhile, Spanish never played that article game, so it calmly kept naranja, watching English fumble its consonants as usual.
