At first glance, this list is fascinating, but it needs a bit of context.

What weโ€™re really seeing here isnโ€™t a list of languages that have stayed the same for thousands of years, but languages with long written traditions. Over time, all languages evolve; sometimes so much that ancient and modern forms are no longer mutually intelligible.

Greek and Tamil are often highlighted for their remarkable continuity, with texts spanning over two millennia. Chinese is unique in that its writing system has remained relatively stable, even though the spoken language has changed significantly. Hebrew presents an unusual case: it ceased to be spoken for centuries and was later revived into a modern form.

Others, like Persian and Aramaic, have undergone major transformations across different historical stages, meaning what we speak today is quite different from their ancient counterparts.

So while these languages connect us to deep histories, they remind us of something even more interesting: languages donโ€™t survive by staying the same; they survive by changing.
