Dr. Nick Sowden is the current lead of the Medicine Immersion for UQ’s MEDI7300 course. Originally from the Sunshine Coast, he moved to Brisbane for university, completing a Bachelor of Arts at UQ, followed by a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Griffith University. He is now a Consultant Cardiologist with a subspecialty in Heart Failure, and a Senior Lecturer at UQ. Dr. Sowden also serves as Co-Chair of the Queensland Statewide Heart Failure Steering Committee, where he contributes to improving heart failure care across the state.

The University of Queensland Internal Medicine Society (UQIMS) is expanding and we’re recruiting for two new officer roles to join our executive team and work closely with our current directors. Whether you’re a creative thinker who loves design and communication, or someone passionate about clinical research and internal medicine education, this is your chance to get involved and contribute to UQIMS’s mission of promoting academic excellence and specialty engagement.

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Basil Almehdawy, a consultant in gastroenterology and hepatology, for a special session on gastrointestinal emergencies.

Dr. Almehdawy completed his medical training in Queensland and further advanced his expertise through a fellowship in luminal endoscopy at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, specializing in complex procedures such as advanced polypectomy, small bowel endoscopy (including balloon-assisted and capsule endoscopy), and the management of gastrointestinal strictures.

With a commitment to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care, Dr. Almehdawy’s clinical interests include therapeutic endoscopy, colorectal cancer prevention and screening, obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, and the management of unexplained iron deficiency anemia.

UQ Internal Medicine Society will hold its AGM on October 29th to wrap up the year. This event is for members who want to see what is in store for next year and participate in the club. All 2024 UQIMS members are welcome to apply for any positions for 2025! Here are a couple of prerequisites for applying for our positions:

1️⃣Read the position descriptions for any role(s) you would like to apply for.
2️⃣Check for your eligibility and all requirements by referring to Part 7 of the constitution.
3️⃣Complete the executive nomination form by October 19th, 11:59 pm! You must be a member by the time you submit your nomination form.
