Mars Clinic - Continence Clinic for Children and Adolescents

Mars Clinic - Continence Clinic for Children and Adolescents We understand the sometimes embarrassing nature of continence issues. No problem is too small. Do you notice that your child is struggling with toileting?

With 3% of Australian school-aged children suffering from daytime bladder control and 10% suffering from bedwetting, the Mars Clinic was established to meet the significant community need for the treatment of children with bladder and bowel conditions. MARS CLINIC
Your Partner in Children’s Continence

Are you dealing with a child or adolescent with bladder or bowel problems and don’t know whether

to seek help? Our specifically trained Physiotherapists use the latest technology and scientific research to provide a specific diagnosis and treatment plan. Is your school-age child:
•still wetting during the day
•still wetting the bed at night
•needing to go to the toilet many times a day
•soiling their underwear
•developing recurrent urinary tract infections? If you answered yes to any of these questions, we may be able to help. Most children, but not all, gain bladder and bowel control by 4 to 5 years of age. It is important that all children over 5 years, with daytime wetting or soiling issues, are seen by a Health Professional experienced with children’s continence. The Purpose of the Mars Clinic

Leaking urine when laughing, jumping, or playing sport isn’t always just excitement. It may be a sign that your child’s pelvic floor muscles need support. Children with pelvic floor dysfunction may struggle to stay dry during activity, which can affect their confidence in sport and play. Physiotherapy can help strengthen and coordinate these muscles so kids can enjoy being active without worry.

Constipation: More Than Tummy Trouble

Constipation isn’t always obvious. It can show up as toilet accidents, leakage, or your child rushing to the toilet too late. Constipation often causes pressure on the bladder, making it harder to stay dry. At Mars Clinic, we help families understand how bowel habits affect bladder control and guide you with clear, achievable steps to improve both. Early support can reduce accidents and discomfort and prevent future issues.

Some daytime accidents are expected during toilet training, but if your child is still wetting during the day beyond the age of five, it’s worth checking in. Daytime accidents can affect your child’s confidence, participation at school, and sense of control. Our continence physiotherapists work closely with families to understand the cause, whether it’s bladder function, posture, or habits, and to create practical, respectful strategies that support better continence and self-esteem.

Is your child going all day without using the toilet? While it might seem like a good thing, holding for long periods can actually overstretch the bladder and lead to leaks or sudden urgency. A healthy toileting routine includes regular trips to the toilet and relaxed posture whilst on the toilet. We help families understand what is normal and how to build better habits. Small changes in routine now can make a big difference to your child’s continence, comfort and confidence in the long run.

Starting a new school year can bring excitement but also anxiety, especially for children still learning to manage their toileting. If your child is having accidents, rushing to the toilet, or avoiding it altogether, early support can prevent long-term issues. Our continence physiotherapists can help your child feel confident at school with practical strategies that fit into busy routines.

We’re here to work with you and your child to make sure they can focus on learning, not worrying about the toilet.

Some children avoid using the toilet at school, but “holding on” can lead to bladder and bowel issues.

That’s where Toilet Tactics, a national program by Continence Health Australia, comes in! It helps schools create safe, clean, and welcoming toilets and teaches kids healthy toileting habits early on.
