What’s the best exercise for high blood pressure?

A systematic review and meta analysis by Edwards et al. in 2023 asked this very question.

They found benefits from several different modalities of exercise including.

High Intensity Interval Training

Resistance Training

Aerobic Training

But, they found the most effective exercise was isometric exercises. Specifically wall sits.

Conveniently, this is also probably the easiest one to do!

All you need to do is put your back on a wall and slide down into a position that you can hold for 2 minutes (it shouldn’t be easy, but doesn’t need to be a maximal effort either).

Rest for 1 minute and repeat that 3 more times.

If you can do that a few times a week, you are off to a great start.

Despite poor balance putting 100’s of Australians in hospital each year it’s one of the easiest physical qualities to improve.

Here are some EASY options to work on your balance so you or someone you know doesn’t end up being another statistic.

Some snippets from EHA’s first team retreat.

Was great to step out of the clinics for a bit and hang out as a team.

Of course it couldn’t have been an EHA event without a bit of competition. Which team do you think won?

🏆 Acacia Ridge ?
🏆 Alderley ?
🏆 North Lakes?
🏆 Supports Team?

You don’t want to miss or skim over one of these things.

During your initial assessment an overlooked piece of information in my experience is someone’s relationship with exercise. I find myself spending more and more time and energy on this section of the assessment particularly with those with chronic illness, disease and disability. This is because I have found that this is where almost all of the things otherwise stopping them from engaging in exercise live. It’s often things we can address with a simple open discussion and unpacking of beliefs.

Take your time here, ask these three questions then clear any roadblocks before proceeding!

PSA: Your joints are not “bone on bone.” Not the way you’re imagining it.

This phrase is often thrown around as a “diagnosis” for those living with osteoarthritis. But it’s an oversimplification of a complex condition, and in our experience, it only creates fear and worry.

Which is no wonder. The term “bone on bone” creates a misleading mental image of two bare bones grinding together with every movement.

So, why do we hear it so often?

It stems from X-ray images that show narrowing of the space between bones. These images, however, don’t tell the full story.

X-rays can’t show cartilage directly. They show the space where cartilage, joint fluid, and other tissues sit. When this space appears narrow, it’s often labeled “bone on bone” — but in reality, most joints still have cartilage or repair tissue, even in more advanced stages of osteoarthritis.

These changes are common and often a natural part of aging. In fact, many people have these X-ray findings without any pain at all.

The takeaway?

Your X-ray may show age-related changes, but your bones are likely not grinding together, and you can still move your body safely. If you are still worried need some extra help doing so, let us know!
