We recently welcomed Speech Pathologists from Far North Queensland for a Professional Development session focused on high-tech AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).

As two of the few SLPs providing speech therapy across Cooktown and Thursday Island, they play a vital role in supporting communication access in remote communities.

Not all assistive technology is the same. Some products are simple to use, while others need professional advice and setup.

The NDIS groups AT into two categories: low risk and higher risk - to help keep you safe and supported.

🟢 Low risk AT includes everyday aids that are easy to buy and use safely.
🟠 Higher risk AT covers more complex systems, like power wheelchairs or communication devices, which may need setup or training.

If you’re considering higher risk AT, the NDIS requires advice from a skilled health professional (such as an Occupational Therapist or Speech Pathologist) before purchase.
