This has always been the message of Motherhood, Mood and Food whether in our workshops or individual consultations- ‘Healthy food is different for different people at different times’
Such an important message to be aware of your situation as things can change. Doing the best we can is ok!

Dude, we are living in a pandemic, people have lost people, their jobs, and so much more. The school situation is bonkers. We're all doing the best we can.⠀
⠀
Many of us our buying what the store has or what we can barely afford. ⠀
⠀
Or we're serving only foods the kids eat with zero complaints, because we cannot deal with complaints. ⠀
⠀
Many of us are eating twice as much take out as we ever have. ⠀
⠀
And it's okay.⠀
⠀
This is not the time to get down on someone or yourself for doing the best you can. ⠀
⠀
Of course it's also totally fine if you're cooking more than ever and loving it.⠀
⠀
It's different for everyone.⠀

Some food for thought on how our words can have far reaching affects on others, particularly children.

Some food for thought on how our words can have far reaching affects on others, particularly children.

Little ears are listening. Little eyes are watching. If we are serious about interrupting the trans-generational impact of diet culture (which includes putting the brakes on appearance-related conversations) then let's start local. It's completely understandable that we greet people starting with their appearance - we mean well & this is how we've been socialised. AND we can't ignore that it sends strong messages to younger people about "how to greet people." Do we see younger kids doing it? Nope. And let's leave it like that as long as possible.

What to do/say instead:
There are a million other more interesting and kind ways to greet & speak with people that have nothing to do with appearance. One question I am often asked if when others - sometimes grandparents or families-in-law - comment on us, or our child's appearance. Comparisons are often the worst, particularly from sibling to sibling, or cousin to cousin (my clients tell me ALL THE TIME that this deeply impacted them as children so please try not to do this). If it's your in-laws, you might think about putting your partner to work in having the conversation with their family, awkward as that may be. Asking people ahead of time stops those heart-in-the-mouth moments where we might find ourselves either been too syrupy-sweet or a little too harsh. And let's just start with ourselves. Notice the urge to comment - on yourself or others. And either spread the shush, or consider what else to say....

And as for food? Please can we just enjoy it, and make our own choices rather than labelling it. Someone at the table will thank you.

We talk about the benefits of the mediterranean diet in our mood and food workshops particularly when it comes to depression. In this latest study it shows that those who followed the Mediterranean-style diet have the lowest risk of health complications. Great news!

People who were overweight or obese who followed a Mediterranean-style diet were less likely to die from any cause than people in the "normal" weight range who didn't, a large, long-term study finds.

Limited places are available in our next Motherhood, Mood & Food 4-week workshop starting Wednesday,15th July.
Workshops will be held online from 10:00am - 11:30am.

It's hard being a busy Mum to find the time to make our diet as healthy as it can be. This workshop is an excellent act of self care! No guilt here about making unhealthy food choices, and this workshop is not about trying to lose weight. This is about discussing helpful ways you can try and add nutrition to your daily routine to positively impact your mental wellbeing.

This workshop series is run by Fran from Motherhood, Mood and Food, who is also one of our wonderful Lived Experience team members! Fran has a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition Science) and a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy and holds professional registration as a Nutritionist.

This workshop series is provided to you free of charge, however registration is essential. Please email Fran at fran@peachtree.org.au to secure your spot.

Want to be involved in a research study? Dr Anthony Villani
& team are looking for participants to answer some quick questions about the benefits and barriers to following a Mediterranean style diet. I've just done it and it was quick!

We discussed today in the MM&F workshop the benefits of eating this way and the positive correlation found with improvements in mental health.
