Mastication does more than prepare food for digestion.

Chewing stimulates trigeminal sensory pathways, may support alertness and cerebral activity, and helps engage the parasympathetic “rest and digest” state.

And yes — feeling safe and regulated around meals matters too.

Chew slowly.
Chew well.
Chew with intention.

Poor sleep in perimenopause is often framed purely as a hormonal issue — but the story may be broader.

Hormonal shifts may influence breathing stability, airway muscle tone, clenching, nervous system regulation and sleep architecture.

An emerging conversation is whether some symptoms reflect not just hormones, but changes in function being unmasked.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy can be part of the solution to improving sleep.

Here’s a more AHPRA-aligned version — factual, measured, and avoids overstatement:

👅📏 Assessment matters

Not all tongue ties present the same way, and not all require the same approach.

At Smile Tone, we use tools such as MyoMate alongside clinical assessment to evaluate tongue function — including range of movement, coordination, and how the tongue works within the broader orofacial system.

Assessment focuses on function, not just appearance.

Where a restriction is identified and considered clinically relevant, we work collaboratively with referring practitioners to support a functionally informed, manual therapy–guided approach to care, including preparation and follow-up where appropriate.

This may involve:
• supporting oral muscle function
• addressing surrounding tissue tension
• guiding pre- and post-procedure exercises
• coordinating care within a multidisciplinary team

Management decisions are individualised and based on clinical findings and patient needs.

👅 Function-focused
📏 Individualised assessment
🤝 Collaborative care

Not all heroes wear scrubs… some work from home, keep the clinic running, and still end up talking about tongue ties more than they ever expected 😄

Meet Deneca — part of our admin team and Irish dancing enthusiast.

Between coordinating patients and absorbing everything OMT-related, it turns out… you can’t work here without becoming a little bit obsessed with tongues.

Fran Clarke is stepping back from Smile Tone as she reduces her clinical hours and shifts her focus toward growing her own myofunctional clinic.

Fran has been such a valued part of our team — bringing knowledge, care, and a genuine passion for helping patients (and a very solid appreciation for all things tongue-related 😄).

While we’re sad to see her go, we’re also incredibly supportive of this next chapter for her. It’s been a privilege to work alongside her, and we know she’ll continue to do great things in the OMT space.

Fran — thank you for everything you’ve contributed to Smile Tone. You’ll always be part of the story here.
💜 Your ST family

👃 Nasal breathing matters more than most people realise

Breathing through the nose isn’t just a preference — it’s how the body is designed to function.

Nasal breathing helps to:
• filter and humidify air
• support oxygen uptake
• regulate the nervous system
• guide proper tongue posture
• influence jaw and facial development

When breathing shifts to the mouth, the body often compensates — and over time this can impact sleep, posture, oral function, and overall health.

In clinic, we assess how someone breathes — not just if they can.

Because breathing is the foundation.

Collaboration has always been at the heart of how we work.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy doesn’t sit in isolation — the best outcomes happen when health professionals work together, sharing knowledge and supporting patients from multiple perspectives.

That’s why we’re excited to be sharing space with the teams at Littleton Cole Dental Centre and Leading Light.

Today our new Smile Tone signage went up on the building, and seeing all the logos together was a great reminder of the kind of care model we believe in — integrative, collaborative, and patient-centred.

Dentistry, airway health, laser dentistry, and orofacial myofunctional therapy working side-by-side creates a powerful environment for patients and families.

We’re looking forward to continuing to grow these connections and supporting our shared patients together.

👩‍⚕️ Meet Karina Kashmiri

Karina shares what inspired her to pursue Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) and why this field matters so much to her.

Like many clinicians working in this space, Karina became passionate about OMT after seeing how oral function, breathing, and posture can influence overall health and development.

Helping patients improve how they breathe, chew, swallow, and rest their tongue can have a meaningful impact on everyday life — from sleep and comfort to confidence and wellbeing.

We’re proud to have Karina as part of the Smile Tone team, bringing curiosity, compassion, and a strong commitment to patient care.

By around age 3, children should be able to chew with their lips closed and breathe comfortably through their nose while eating.

Open-mouth chewing isn’t just messy. It can be a sign that something else is going on — such as airway challenges, enlarged tonsils/adenoids, low oral muscle tone, reduced awareness and coordination or muscular imbalance.

Sometimes it’s habit.
Sometimes it’s airway.
Sometimes it’s muscle discoordination.

If your child is 3+ and still chewing with their mouth open, it’s worth looking a little deeper.

Early support makes a big difference.

Small habits shape growing faces.

🌍 World Orofacial Myofunctional Sciences Day – February 17

👉 It’s More Than Exercises

Myofunctional therapy isn’t about doing random tongue reps.

It’s about teaching correct functional movements — how to breathe, rest, chew and swallow properly — and integrating those patterns into daily life.

Because if function isn’t integrated into posture, airway and habit patterns, it won’t hold.

It’s not just exercises.
It’s neuromuscular re-education for the whole system.

👅➡️🦶 From tongue to toes — it’s all connected

The tongue isn’t just a mouth organ.
It’s part of the body’s fascial system — a continuous web of connective tissue linking the mouth to the neck, spine, pelvis, and all the way down to the feet.

Research by Nikki Mills and others has highlighted how tongue posture, tension, and restriction can influence global fascial patterns, posture, and movement well beyond the face.

When the tongue isn’t functioning optimally, the body often compensates elsewhere.

This may show up as:
• jaw or neck tension
• breathing difficulties
• postural changes
• foot or gait issues
• persistent, unexplained tightness

This is why we don’t assess the tongue in isolation.

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) looks at how the tongue, lips, jaw, breathing, and posture work together as part of a whole-body system, supporting more efficient function from the top down.

The tongue is the body’s rudder.
Big influence.
Whole-body impact.

Fran and Cheree recently met up in St Gallen, Switzerland for the Tongue Tie Conference. From reconnecting with Australian colleagues to making new international friends, it was a powerful reminder that the conversation around tongue ties and oral function is global.

The biggest takeaway?
What we’re learning overseas isn’t wildly different — it reinforces the importance of good assessment, teamwork, and function-first thinking.

We’re excited to bring these insights back to our Smile Tone team and translate them into what matters most: better outcomes for our patients.
