This week, Cheree joined the Myo Munchee team at the OHAA National Congress, contributing to discussions on functional oral health and showcasing her first scientific poster titled “Orofacial Function and Oral Health: A Collaborative, Functional Approach to Whole-Person Care.”

Her work emphasises the growing importance of functional assessment in oral health — exploring how patterns such as mouth breathing, low tongue posture, and inefficient chewing can impact dental, airway, and systemic health.

Engaging with fellow oral health professionals, Cheree helped demonstrate how simple functional tools like the Myo Munchee and the MyoMate can support improved muscle tone, chewing efficiency, and long-term oral stability.

🌿 Neolifting: More than a Facial Massage

Neolifting is a non-invasive technique that combines sculptural facial massage and intraoral (buccal) release to work with the muscles, fascia and lymphatic system of the face.

During treatment, gentle but precise techniques:
✨ Stimulate circulation and lymphatic flow, which may reduce puffiness and support natural tissue recovery
✨ Release tension stored in facial muscles, including those used for chewing, speaking and expression
✨ Engage fascial layers that support posture and balance in the face and jaw
✨ Promote relaxation in the nervous system, which can influence how the body perceives and processes pain

The images shown here are of the same person, taken before and after one session on the same afternoon. These photos demonstrate how facial tissues can appear different immediately after treatment, though every individual’s experience will vary.

Our approach is about more than appearance — it’s about supporting function, comfort, and wellbeing through the orofacial system.

After 18 wonderful months with Smile Tone, our much‑loved Hannah Crawford is stepping back to focus on her own clinic in Melbourne — and to spend more time with her son.

Hannah has been an incredible clinician, supporting countless families with her warmth, skill, and ability to make even tongue exercises feel fun (almost 😉). While we’ll miss seeing her in the clinic each week, she will always remain part of the Smile Tone family.

Not all pillows are created equal! 🛏️
When choosing the right pillow, it’s not just about comfort—it’s about support, posture, and breathing.
Here’s what to look for:

✅ Supportive strength – Your pillow should support at least 5kg in weight (the average weight of a human head) without flattening.
✅ Shape retention – It should keep its shape while your head is on it, not just spring back after you lift your head.
✅ Neck and spine alignment – Keeps your head, neck, and spine in a neutral position.
✅ Breathability – Choose materials that help regulate temperature and promote nasal breathing.
✅ Personal fit – Match the pillow to your sleeping style (side, back, or stomach).

👉 The right pillow can make the difference between tossing all night and waking up refreshed.

✨ Karina is a clinician who has recently joined our team

With over 25 years of experience in dentistry across Sydney, Dubai, and now Brisbane, Karina brings incredible knowledge, skill and heart to her work as a Dental Hygienist & Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist (BOH, Grad Dip HPE). 🦷🌿

Karina’s own personal health and fertility journey ignited her passion for whole-body health, deepening her understanding of how oral health is intricately linked to overall wellbeing. This has led her to focus on a preventative, root-cause approach to oral and facial development, dental crowding, airway function, sleep, behaviour and cognition.

Her extensive myofunctional therapy training, combined with nutritional studies and clinical expertise, allows her to help both children and adults address Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) and support long-term health outcomes. 🌱💤💡

Beyond the clinic, Karina has volunteered in remote villages in Kenya 🇰🇪, delivered community outreach programs in Dubai 🇦🇪, and continues her passion for education and interdisciplinary care in airway health.

When she's not supporting her patients, Karina enjoys traveling, cooking (with a delicious Indian twist!), and exploring nature with her three beautiful children. 🌏🍲🌳

We are so grateful for Karina’s expertise, compassion, and dedication to preventative care. 💖

👋 Meet Freeda — she's recently joined the team.

Freeda is a warm, holistic, and functional practitioner passionate about helping children build strong foundations in communication, feeding, and orofacial function. 💬🍎👄

As a qualified Paediatric Speech Pathologist (BSpPath, CPSP) and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist, Freeda brings extensive experience in early intervention, speech sound disorders, language delays, feeding challenges, and orofacial dysfunctions.

Her passion for orofacial myology was sparked after seeing recurring patterns in her young clients — tongue ties, mouth breathing, tethered oral tissues, and low muscle tone — leading her to complete additional training to better support these children from the ground up. 🧠💡

Freeda believes in the power of early identification and collaborative care to create strong functional foundations that support long-term health and development. 🌱

When she’s not in clinic, you’ll likely find Freeda sipping tea ☕, creating playful therapy resources 🎲, or enjoying some much-deserved sun, salt and sea! 🌊🌞

We are so lucky to have her expertise and passion as part of the Smile Tone team 💛

This is why we screen all of our patient for sleep disturbances.

It’s too important to ignore!

Make ‘achieving good sleep quality’ as your #1 New Year’s resolution!

Happy New year - may 2025 be full of health and happiness! 🎉🥳

When you don’t sleep well, your brain literally begins eating itself:

Researchers found that prolonged sleep loss causes the brain's immune cells to go into overdrive, potentially leading to long-term damage.

The brain's glial cells, responsible for housekeeping functions, become hyperactive in sleep-deprived mice. Astrocytes, which normally eliminate unnecessary synapses, begin breaking down more brain connections and debris in sleep-deprived animals.

While this may initially serve as a protective mechanism, clearing potentially harmful debris and rebuilding worn circuitry, it could be detrimental in the long run. Microglial cells, which remove damaged cells and debris, also show increased activity after chronic sleep deprivation.

This is particularly concerning, as excessive microglial activity has been linked to various brain disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and other forms of neurodegeneration. The research suggests that sleep loss triggers astrocytes to start breaking down more of the brain's connections and their debris, with portions of synapses literally being eaten by astrocytes due to sleep loss.

Most of this remodeling appears to target larger, more mature synapses that are used more intensively. It’s still unclear whether getting more sleep could reverse the effects of sleep deprivation.

The findings may explain why lack of sleep increases vulnerability to dementia and other neurological disorders. Notably, Alzheimer's deaths have increased by 50% since 1999, highlighting the potential link between sleep deprivation and neurodegenerative diseases. Sleep plays a crucial role in maintaining brain health and function, serving as a vital period for neural restoration and cognitive processing.

During sleep, the brain undergoes essential maintenance tasks, clearing away toxic byproducts accumulated during wakefulness and consolidating memories. Research has shown that sleep deprivation can lead to impaired cognitive function, decreased attention span, and reduced problem-solving abilities.

Chronic sleep loss may contribute to the development of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Sleep allows for the strengthening of neural connections important for learning and memory formation, while pruning unnecessary synapses to optimize brain function. The glymphatic system, which removes waste products from the brain, is particularly active during sleep, highlighting its importance in maintaining neural health. Adequate sleep also supports emotional regulation, with sleep-deprived individuals often experiencing mood swings, irritability, and increased stress levels.

The brain's plasticity, or its ability to adapt and change, is enhanced during sleep, facilitating learning and skill acquisition. Different sleep stages serve unique purposes, with the REM sleep being particularly important for creativity and emotional processing, while slow-wave sleep contributes to physical restoration and memory consolidation.

Sleep also plays a role in hormone regulation, including those that affect appetite, stress response, and growth. Insufficient sleep has been linked to increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing its importance beyond just cognitive function.

Furthermore, sleep supports the immune system, with sleep-deprived individuals being more susceptible to infections and illnesses. The brain's energy consumption is carefully regulated during sleep, allowing for the replenishment of energy stores depleted during wakefulness. This process is crucial for maintaining optimal cognitive performance and overall brain health. In essence, sleep is not merely a period of inactivity but a dynamic state that is fundamental to our brain's ability to function effectively, adapt to new experiences, and maintain long-term health
