📒I frequently discuss this book with clients who are considering whether using donor s***m, eggs or embryos is the path they need to pursue to make their family.

❤️The three groups I see most commonly either considering or already using donor gametes are couples whose fertility treatments have been unsuccessful, same s*x couples and single women.

🤔It’s a significant decision that most people never anticipate they might have to make. Some find it relatively easy to come to terms with, while for others, it's a much more challenging decision.

📖This book is valuable for those still deliberating whether using donor eggs, s***m, or embryos is the right choice for them, as well as for those who have already made that decision and seek guidance on navigating their family dynamics.

❓It addresses common fears and concerns through examples from diverse families facing similar situations.

🌏In Australia the easiest and cheapest way to get this book is from Amazon.

👩‍💼While a book cannot replace professional counselling, it can assist in identifying your concerns and initiating discussions with loved ones.

🙏Here in Brisbane, we have several excellent fertility counselors. Please reach out if you need suggestions on who to talk to for support.

15 months to the day after having my first chemotherapy dose I had my last one yesterday. This has been a long and, at times, challenging chapter of my life. Like with most parents when I was told I had breast cancer my first thought was of my then 6 year old daughter.

I had no idea of what would lie ahead but her presence made the diagnosis terrifying, the decision making simple and kept me showing up for what felt like never ending treatment. Today I’m equally thankful for the treatments that were available to me and that they are finally, finally over.

I’ll be forever grateful for the village of people who helped my daughter and I in a million different ways throughout this process. The incredible kindness which came my way was so appreciated and I I don’t know how I would have managed without it.

So don’t forget ladies to check your breasts and don’t put off your mammograms once you’re eligible.

I’m very lucky I felt my breast lumps when I did and because of that now I can dare to believe that I will watch my small girl grow into a big one.

I know Mother’s Day can be a tough day for many. Those who no longer have their mum’s here to celebrate, those that lost the little ones who would have or did call them mum and those who haven’t become the mum’s they wanted to be.

Everyday I’m so grateful for this little person who calls me mum. And today my thoughts are with those who are being celebrated and with those for whom it’s much more complicated.

🌸 Navigating the unpredictability of perimenopause 🌺

🌼 Let’s talk about something half the population go through but often isn’t discussed openly and mystifies most of us who are making our way through it - Perimenopause! 🚺✨

I’ve been on this journey myself and it’s a rollercoaster. 🎢 If you’re wondering whether you’re in perimenopause, here are a few signs that might be help:

1️⃣ Irregular Periods: Oh, the unpredictability! Your once regular cycle will turn into a bit of a surprise party. 🎉🩸Often you will find your cycles will initially become shorter and then lengthen and much more sporadic. It is also common to bleed for longer as women will ovulate twice in a cycle and the periods will arrive on top of each other.

2️⃣ Hot Flashes: Feeling the heat? Literally! 🔥 That sudden warmth is definitely a perimenopause trademark. 🌡️😅 For some women these are mild and hardly noticeable. For others they can be debilitating, affecting their concentration, sleep, moods, relationships and the list goes on....

3️⃣ Sleep Struggles: Insomnia, night sweats - you sleep routine is playing hard to get. 😴🌙

4️⃣ Mood Swings: One minute you’re on cloud nine, the next feeling a bit down. It can be hard to embrace the rollercoaster of emotions but try to recognise it and give yourself grace. 🎭💖

5️⃣ Changes in Libido: Many women wonder, “Where did it go?” 😟⁉️ The vaginal dryness due to the lower oestrogen levels can make s*x different and perhaps less enjoyable than before.

Remember, we’re all unique, and our journeys are different. It’s okay to seek support, whether it’s from friends, family, or health professionals. 💕💪 Perimenopause symptoms last on average for 7 years so let’s try to embrace this phase of life with open hearts and a sense of humor! 😄🌸 There is more information about perimenopause available on my website. ⭐️There are several factors you should consider when choosing your fertility acupuncturist as they can be so much more than a person putting needles into you.

✨Firstly, I think it’s really useful if you can find someone who’s knowledgeable about fertility in all its forms. Unfortunately, whilst we’d all like it if everyone fell pregnant easily it’s just not always the case. So it’s good to find someone who is familiar with fertility clinics in the area and the available treatments options.

⚡️We are fortunate in Brisbane now to have a variety of options available. These include bulk-billing and low cost clinics which makes it all much more affordable than previously. Also there are some clinics or specialists who will suit you more than others and your acupuncturist may be able to guide you in the right direction to avoid costly and time consuming visits to specialists you aren’t comfortable with.

💥An experienced acupuncturist will know about supplements, testing, foods, exercise and many other factors which may help you achieve a healthy pregnancy.

⭐️Secondly, all the research points to consistent regular treatments being of the most benefit. This means you’ll probably need to go more than once.
So it’s best to find somewhere convenient to either work or home and who is open when you’re available to go.

✨Lastly, find someone you like. Trying for a baby in any way involves a lot of ups and downs which will be easier to navigate with a supportive practitioner by your side.

🎉🧧Happy Lunar New Year🧧🎉

🐉This new year brings a transition from the slower yin energy of the Water Rabbit to the more vibrant Yang energy of the Wood Dragon.

🐲The yang energy of the Dragon exudes motivation, energy, growth, and creativity.

🌳The element is wood which represents shedding what is no longer ours to allow for growth and renewal.

🎉This is a great year to shake off the past, try new things, embrace change and pursuing dreams.

😊As a Dragon myself I'm excited to see what this year brings me, my loved ones and my clients.

🧧Wishing everyone a prosperous Year of the Dragon🐉

🫄Inductions of labour are a frequent topic of conversation in my clinic. I see many of my clients from conception through to the birth. As the birth approaches the when and how needs to be decided.

🤔Many women are encouraged to consider an induction of labour for a variety of reasons as their due date approaches. Some are more than happy to go down that path. Others reluctantly agree due to complications in the pregnancy making it safer for a baby to be born. Others are much happier to wait until there labour starts naturally but feel pressured by their health care providers.

❓What is an induction of labour❓
A medical induction of labour involves using medications and other techniques to artificially encourage the process of labour to commence. Medications, such as prostaglandin gel, or a mechanical method, like a balloon catheter, are used to soften, thin and begin to open the cervix. Then the membranes are artificially broken and syntocinon is given intravenously to make the uterus contract.

❓Why are they offered❓
There are many reasons why an induction of labour is carried out. They fall into 2 categories - medical or social. Sometimes it is considered safer for either the mum or baby for the baby to be born before labour starts spontaneously. There are many medical indications for an induction of labour, such as high blood pressure or a baby not growing appropriately.

❓Why do some women not want one❓
In my work I meet many women who want to avoid an induction of labour. The most common worries I hear are
1. That either their own bodies or their babies won’t be ready for birth yet.
2. It may not work and they will end up with an emergency caesarean section.
3. They will require more pain relief as contractions from an induction are more painful than a than a natural labour.

🫄Whilst many women who have a low risk pregnancy can safely wait for their baby to decide their birthday some women will have to go ahead with the IOL on their medical teams advice. There are many ways to prepare your body for both a spontaneous labour and for a planned medical induction.

🌼There are many ways to prepare your body for both a spontaneous labour and for a planned medical induction. These include:
👉Raspberry leaf tea
👉Dates
👉Clary sage oil
👉Acupressure
👉Vitamin E
👉Positioning
👉Curb walking
You can use these regardless of whether you are having your labour induced or waiting for a spontaneous labour.

🙄Inductions certainly produces much angst for many pregnant women. It’s always best you understand why an intervention is being offered as once something is done it can't be undone.

❓Always remember you are always allowed to ask questions and decline if you don’t feel ready yet. Saying no once does not mean if off the cards forever you can always discuss it again at a later date.

October is breast cancer awareness month. I’ve been a bit slack in posting here but I am constantly telling anyone who will listen to regularly check their own breasts and to book their mammograms.

You can have mammograms from 40 years old but you need to book them in yourself. You’ll receive a letter of invitation from Breast Screen Queensland when you’re about to turn 50.

Most breast lumps are benign but when there not they’re really not. Receiving treatment for breast cancer early will potentially reduce the amount of treatment you require and definitely improve your prognosis.

1 in 7 Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime and luckily most of will have really good long-term survival rates if they receive the available treatments. And you will only get those if you know you have it.

I’m through most of my own treatment now and this is my newly acquired book. I’m learning all about how to help in the aftermath of a cancer diagnosis and it’s subsequent treatment.

Fortunately life continues for most of us but it’s not quite the same as it was before. There’s lots of things that can help people of with the physical and psychological challenges that remain after the active treatment ends.

📖 Here is my latest read. It’s an important reminder about our responsibility as parents to ensure we provide our children with the best genetic makeup possible.

🤔I think sometimes we forget how important parents are to their children before they are conceived. Once we’re pregnant and our babies are born we would do nearly anything to protect them by keeping them healthy and safe.

🥚We need to be mindful that our children are made entirely from our gametes (eggs and s***m). As both eggs and s***m take 3 months to mature this gives us an opportunity to improve our chances of a healthy and successful pregnancy.

🥕🚶❌There are many ways we can optimise our health prior to trying to fall pregnant. These include improving diet, optimising exercise habits and eliminating harmful chemicals from our homes.

💡No matter how you’re trying to conceive there are ways to improve your chances. Book via my website if you’d like to discuss preconception care.
