Surrender, a concept I’ve been getting familiar with this week, amongst the struggles of letting go of what I thought was going to happen, and being present with what is actually happening. You know, when the universe has other plans!

Across spiritual traditions, surrender has never meant giving up. In yoga, it’s Ishvara Pranidhana, offering your actions to something greater than yourself. In Buddhism, it’s releasing attachment to outcome and accepting the way things are. In Sufism, it’s the taming or even dissolving of the ego.

🕉️ In mantra practice, surrender can be practiced and eventually embodied. Each repetition is a small letting go, a small act of devotion, a little shift towards offering yourself and your actions up to universal consciousness, to nature, to life.

We don’t chant to arrive somewhere. We chant to realise that we are indeed already here.

🕉️ The word 'mantra' gets thrown around a lot in the modern world but is an English affirmation actually a mantra? And do they even work?

🧠 Positive affirmations can actually backfire if you don’t believe them. When people with low self esteem say something they don’t fully believe in, then their mind will push back and reinforce the opposite!

🕉️ Mantra works differently. It doesn’t ask your ego to agree. It bypasses the mental chatter and points to the unseen rather than the material world.

🧘‍♀️ This is something to be mindful of when making your sankalpa (resolve) for your yoga practice. You really need to feel your sankalpa in all the right places, not just say words.

After 10+ years with my head buried in science journals, research studies, and writing… I am resurfacing into the world. Hello!

Over the past decade, I have been researching mantra, chanting, meditation, and sound-based practices, and we now have 9 peer-reviewed papers published, with 3 more currently being written.

Our studies have explored areas including neuroscience, the nervous system, breathing, stress regulation, attention, emotional regulation, and altered states of consciousness.

This year, my focus is getting all of this science to you in ways that are practical, grounded, and accessible.

I know I am not the only person that would love to see sound practices recognised in clinics, healthcare, schools, workplaces, yoga spaces, and everyday life, where people can experience what the science is showing us.

If you are curious, you can head to my website to:
ॐ - try one of the evidence-based practices for yourself
ॐ - access the free guided practice, short e-book, and writing reflections I’ve put together
ॐ - join the waitlist for the practitioner training launching later this year

The practitioner training is designed for yoga teachers, yoga therapists, psychologists, occupational therapists, health professionals, and anyone wanting a grounded understanding of mantra and sound-based practices through both science and lived practice.
You can go on the waitlist here, and will be the first to know when enrolments open as well as have access to earlybird pricing! https://www.drgemmaperry.com.au/training

It feels really meaningful to share the science of mantra with you.

Thank you for being here, and I would love to know what you would like to know about the science of sound and mantra?

What vocal mantra actually does to your nervous system…
ॐ When you chant Om or hum, the vibration in your throat directly stimulates the vagus nerve, the longest nerve in your body.
ॐ The vagus nerve plays a role in regulating your heart rate, digestion and breathing.
ॐ Stimulating the vagus nerve through humming or chanting om activates your parasympathetic nervous system shifting your body from stress to restoration.
ॐ This is how vocal chanting works differently to mindfulness.
ॐ Yes you are mindful too, but you are also directly impacting your nervous system.
ॐ And even if your mind wanders, which it does ;)
ॐ You and your nervous system still get the benefits from creating the sound.

ॐ Try it? Ommmmmmmm … and head over to my website to get your free mantra reset and evidence-based Om chanting recording!
