Stay Sun Safe, Queensland! 🌞
Did you know that painful sunburns before age 20 can significantly increase the risk of skin cancers later in life—by 150% for squamous cell carcinomas and 160% for some basal cell carcinomas?
Cancer Council Queensland is urging not-for-profit early learning centres, schools, and community groups to apply for free sun-safe marquees through their Portable Shade Project.
In Queensland, where UV levels are 3+ all year round, sunburn can happen in under 10 minutes! Protecting young people is critical, as UV damage adds up over time.
“UV exposure during the first 18 years of life is the most critical risk factor for skin cancer later in life,” says Sharyn Chin Fat, Cancer Council Queensland’s Head of Prevention and Early Detection.
