If you have diabetes, your eyes need extra love. 💙

Here's something many people don't realise. High blood sugar levels can silently damage the tiny blood vessels at the back of your eye.

Over time, this can lead to a condition called diabetic retinopathy which is one of the leading causes of vision loss in Australia.

The tricky part? It usually has no symptoms in the early stages. You can be losing vision without even knowing it.

The good news is that with regular eye checks and good Diabetes management, we can catch changes early and protect your sight.

✅ If you have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, you should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year even if your vision feels perfectly fine.

Ever wondered what the macula actually is? 👁️

It's a tiny, pea-sized area at the back of your eye that does the heavy lifting when it comes to your central vision. Reading, recognising faces, watching TV, seeing fine detail... that's all the macula at work.

When it's healthy, you barely think about it. When it's not, everyday life can become really difficult.

May is Macula Month here in Australia, and throughout the month we'll be sharing everything you need to know about looking after this incredible little part of your eye.

Did you know macular disease affects 1 in 7 Australians over 50? That's why regular eye checks are the best way to catch it early.

Putting in eyedrops can be difficult. Sometimes it might feel like you've missed your eye completely, sometimes you might feel like you got more on your face than in your eye!

Here are 3 simple tips:

Tip #1: Pull your lower lid down with your index finger on your non-dominant hand.

Tip #2: Hold your eye drop above your eye and look at the tip of the bottle.

Tip #3: Aim for the pocket between your eyeball and the lower lid, look away and squeeze.

If you're booked in for cataract surgery, expect a call from our reception staff a day or two before your surgery date to advise you what time you will need to arrive and what time you will need to be fasting from.

On the day of surgery:
✅ Dress in comfortable clothing
✅ Don't wear any make up or strong fragrances
✅ Shower and wash your hair

You'll be greeted by our friendly staff and we'll put some eye drops in to dilate your pupil for surgery (don't worry, it will only be for the eye you're having surgery for).

Expect to:
✅ Be here for 3-4 hours
✅ Feel a little drowsy after your surgery
✅ Wear a shield after the surgery to protect the eye

You'll go home with:
✅ Instructions for after surgery
✅ Prescription for eye drops
✅ Prescription tablets

Our best suggestion is for you to go home and sleep before we see you again the next day for your follow up appointment. We always suggest someone take you home after the surgery so make sure you organise for someone to be there or to pick you up after.

Wondering what actually happens during cataract surgery?

In simple terms, the cloudy lens inside the eye is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens.

This new lens is called an IOL, which stands for intraocular lens.

It is designed to help light pass through the eye more clearly again once a cataract has started affecting your vision.

For many patients, the thought of surgery can feel daunting at first. But understanding what happens often makes it feel much less overwhelming. Our incredible team of Ophthalmic Surgeons and staff will be with you every step of the way.

If cataracts are making everyday life harder, our team can guide you through your options and answer any questions along the way. Call us on (02) 9981 2033 and speak to one of our friendly staff to book your appointment today.

Have you noticed it is becoming harder to see clearly at night? It could be a sign of cataracts.

Cataracts can change the way things look, especially in low light.

As the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, vision can start to look more blurred, dull or unclear especially at night. This can make driving in the evening feel harder than it used to.

Because these changes often happen slowly, many people don't realise how much their vision has changed.

If night vision is becoming more difficult, it may be time for an eye assessment. Book an assessment with one of our Cataract Specialists today. Call our team on (02) 9981 2033 and speak to one of our friendly staff to book your appointment today.

That tiny lens is called an IOL short for Intraocular Lens.

This is the clear artificial lens placed in the eye during cataract surgery after the cloudy natural lens is removed.

Most modern IOLs are made from soft acrylic, which allows them to be folded and inserted through a very small incision.

There are different types of IOLs available including:

• Monofocal – one eye set for distance and one eye for near.
• Toric – for astigmatism
• EDOF – Extended Depth of Focus
• Multifocal– for distance, intermediate and near vision

Small lens. Big job.

If you’re considering cataract surgery, our team can talk you through the options and help find the right lens for you. Give us a call on on (02) 9981 2033 and speak to one of our friendly staff to book your appointment today.

Watch Dr Kaine explain cataract surgery and the common questions we get asked.

With the advancements in technology, there are different options available and it is important to take the time to discuss the best lens option available for you and your lifestyle with your Ophthalmologist.

The type of lens that is inserted into your eye will depend on:
- The curvature of the front surface of your eye.
- The length of your eyeball.
- Your lifestyle and needs.

Book an appointment with our Cataract Surgeons today and they can chat to you about the different options available. Call us on (02) 9981 2033 and speak to one of our friendly staff.

Ever wondered what actually happens to the lens in a cataract?

In a healthy eye, the natural lens is clear and helps focus light so you can see sharply.

As cataracts develop, that lens slowly becomes cloudy. When this happens, light can no longer pass through as clearly, which can make vision seem blurry, dull or hazy even with glasses.

This change often happens gradually, which is why many people don't notice it straight away.

The good news is cataracts can be treated.

If your vision is not as clear as it used to be, our team is here to help. Contact the staff on (02) 9981 2033 to book an appointment with one of our Cataract Specialists today.
