September was eventful, twice in isolation with Julian being a close contact of a colleague with Covid. Both times we have tested negative and been free after a few days, thanks in part to all being double-vaccinated. Despite our good fortune, it’s been a depressing time. There have been angry dem...

People like Dot live forever in how we serve and respect one another with kindness and grace.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We have lost a very dear friend with the passing yesterday of Dot Leigh.

Tireless in her advocacy and agitation for provision of rights, entitlements and recognition for and of persons with intellectual disability and families, Dot was well qualified, both as a parent and exposure to discrimination in the education sector. She had a strong social conscience and served on a number of school councils. Having joined a children’s play group when her children were pre-school, she experienced the comfort and need for support personally and which should be available to other parents of children with disability. Work of that type consumed a greater part of her life; Dot was the founding convenor of the Geelong Parents Network and a member of GenU (formerly Karingal).

Dot was the inaugural President of VALID and served in that capacity, and another period as vice President for a combined 25 years. She was proud to serve in those roles and to be a member of VALID as it grew and achieved changes for people with intellectual disability and their families. She was especially loyal and supportive of Kevin Stone and the VALID staff, and was highly respected and valued by the Committee of Management. We will miss her greatly.

There will be an explosion of joy when the VALID conference returns

***VALID's Having a Say Conference POSTPONED due to COVID-19***

Dear Friends of VALID,

It is with much sadness that we have taken the hard decision to postpone the Having a Say Conference until February 2022.

The most important thing for us is always the safety of all those involved in the Conference and so we have made this decision because of the uncertainty surrounding the current COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown in Victoria.

The Having a Say Conference is really important to all of us here at VALID and so we are really sad that we have had to postpone it.

We will notify you as soon as we have confirmed the new dates in February for the Conference.

Those delegates who have registered to attend or booked to exhibit will have their payment rolled over for the 2022 conference if they wish.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Having a Say Conference it is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Kevin Stone
CEO

This year, Oliver has been supporting Julian in clay modelling and firing, making rice paper rolls and sandwiches, excursions to watch women’s football games, and volunteering at the Brunswick Tool Library. He has been accepting of suggestions I have made to keep Julian motivated or on track. I fe...
