When I’ve let go of my mind 🧠, my heart has taken me to amazing places… even though it may not always feel like it at the time or straight away.

At times our fear of heartbreak, the thing that can keep us closed and what we ‘think’ safe and protected, can actually be the thing that does the opposite and instead limits us from allowing our heart to continue to break open, soften and be free.

I’ve learnt which one of the two I try to choose to follow 💖

Which one do you follow…

BEYOND THE POSTURES...

Yoga at times can be seen in the western world as just the ‘postures’ (asanas), as an exercise to ‘move + stretch’ or to work towards being able to do certain poses and look good. Then there are others who feel they can’t even give it a go because ‘they are not flexible enough’... but yoga is so much more than just that!

Imagine going out for a sandwich and only being given the bread, the spread or the fillings... you would get a taste of part of that sandwich which is great, but you are unlikely to be completely fulfilled as you would have been if you had the sandwich as a whole.

Many people are getting a ‘taste’ of yoga either on the mat in their weekly ‘yoga’ class or through meditation (yes, meditation is a part of yoga) which I think is amazing... but there is also so much more to the practice! Yoga as a complete practice has given me so much... and my hope is to be able to share and give back at least some part of what I have learned and gained.

A YEAR LIKE NO OTHER...

2020 has brought for most of us experiences we would have never expected or guess would ever happen. It has tested us, torn some of us apart, whilst others have had a year of success like no other... people experiencing polar opposites, some creating division, and some of us wanting more than ever to come together.

With people experiencing things on all different ends of the spectrum, those who have feel they have come through unaffected shouldn’t discount any feelings of fear or tensions from the world as a whole that they are carrying. Then there are those who have felt like things have been ripped apart, experienced loss and/or those who feel like things were just picking up only to be slapped back again, you don’t have to put on that brave face every day. It’s important for us not to compare or discount any pain felt from this year, but instead to accept those feelings from our own experiences, let them arise as they come up and release the weight that you have been carrying.

I find it interesting how our culture teaches us to hold in/hide our emotions and trap them until it gets too much like a balloon that is about to explode... and I realised just how much this is ingrained in us when this month I faced heartbreak. I spent 24 hours feeling all the emotions, completely letting myself release the full spectrum of emotions and then beating myself up for being upset, believing I was a fraud because with my yoga & meditation I should know better.... but afterwards, feeling lighter for letting it all out I realised I was actually practicing what I preach as I encourage my clients to let their feelings come up as they arise so that they are not trapped to come up in some shape or form later on &/or making us turn to unhealthy vices to soothe the pain and instead allow us, over time, to again fully open our hearts back up to continue enjoy life without that heaviness and be able to find joy in all the simple things.

My heart goes out to all during this time of reflection as we end a very different year.

To many in the western world yoga is seen as a form of exercise... but after my unexpected trip to India 3 years ago, subsequent visit last year and continuing studies I have learnt it is so much more.

Yogic science is truly fascinating with how much knowledge was known about life so many years ago, including road maps that were created for how to navigate it, bringing us back to our own inner knowledge that has always been there.

I've experienced things that are hard to put into words, strange & scary at times yet beautiful & peaceful. This was definitely a path that I never thought I would take, hence it still feels weird at times, but life had a funny way of taking me in this direction and I'm glad that it did. It has provided me a level of connection, understanding, love and acceptance that I had forgotten, reminding and showing me unity; the essence of yoga which means oneness.

Full of so much gratitude for all my teachings and experiences, now I am also able to share these practices with those who are interested in learning more about yoga and to gain a deeper understanding of the complete practice.

'Some say Yoga is 40,000 years old; some say 10,000; some 3,000 others say 70 or 100 years old. The same goes for the place it came from, no one knows for sure. I like it that way; I love it that nobody knows for sure where it all belongs or where it came from, for me that is what makes Yoga for everyone, for all. That unknowing keeps it pure and connecting with all. It is not just for a particular religion, society, community, culture, or for man or woman and that is the real meaning of Yoga for me. Without explaining, describing, definitions, it belongs to everyone. It is a real union. That is the beauty of Yoga.' ~ Dr Gaurav Malik

EMBRACING AGEING 💖

These days I find we live in a world full of images and focus on external beauty, which can bring with it a fear of ageing for many of us.

Over the years I have been in an out of meditation + yoga practises and been left with such feelings of peace and freedom from experiencing 10 day to 6 week courses, and now currently being on day 8 of my yoga meditation course with .breadner I know it’s time to commit to my practice for this inner peace and acceptance to continue.

All these experiences have helped me to not only show up in the world as a better person, to grow and embody more wisdom, but to also see so much more beauty & completeness within me that I never saw or accepted before.

This year has also gifted me with my first grey hairs appearing, having never had streaks in my hair I’m learning to be curious for how they will add to me instead of finding ways to ‘change’ or hide parts of me.

What if we felt more beautiful both inside and outside as we age? For this to be true then it’s simply our own choice... although it doesn’t seem this way at times with the external chatter around us.

What have you learned to loved more about yourself as you have aged? Have you chosen to accept and embrace the process or avoid and resist it? No judgment either way.

WHEN THE FESTIVE SEASON COMES WITH A SIDE OF SORE HEADS & POSSIBLY REGRETS...

This time of year can centre around social catch ups which includes an excuse to enjoy a drink at lunch, dinner, after work, functions or just because! So it can also be helpful to try and take a more mindful approach to your drinking if one drink easily ends up becoming too many.

🗓 Be aware of your schedule to the next day. Can you afford to feel a dusty the next day and have no regrets, or will you be double beating yourself up the next day for not feeling great and having soo much to do while you are not able to bring your A-game. Have a think about how you want to feel tomorrow each time before you grab that next drink.

💧 Keep hydrated and try drinking a glass of water between each drink (NO alcohol does not keep you hydrated, and instead actually can cause you to be dehydrated... hello headache 🤕).

🥂 Slow down, sip and actually enjoy the taste of your drink, just like you would for a good meal. If you are downing drink after drink or drinking to get drunk and numb things, it can be helpful to take a moment to stop and explore the reason why this is the case, and how you can soothe this craving in a healthier way, e.g. have a nourishing meal, get a massage, go for a walk in nature, talk to a friend etc.

🏃🏻‍♀️ Plan to exercise in your days, this will keep you motivated to limit your drinks or at least know you will be giving some movement to the systems to have a good sweat out of the system and provide a healthy outlet for what can be a busy or anxious time of the year.

MEDITATING IS HARD...

Looking at someone sitting with their eyes close meditating can instantly makes you think they are so calm and peaceful, but what is going on behind those closed eyes can be a whole different story!

The mind can tell us all types of stories, hence the benefit of meditation to help quiet the mind. I hear people say they can't mediate, but I think that is really because of one of two reasons:

1. You are just not interested, and that is totally fine if you fall in this category. There are plenty of other things that you can do for mindfulness to meet you where you are at, even going for a walk without your phone is great!

2. You feel like you are doing it wrong because your mind isn't instantly quiet. But this is what the practice of meditation is, to learn to quiet the mind, so it is totally normal for thoughts to come. The practice is to just observe, and if a thought comes let it arise with no judgement or frustration, then gently bring your focus back to the now. The thought "everyone else looks peaceful doing so I MUST be doing it wrong" is just the mind telling you LIES, and this can be first of many resistances by the mind to the practice.

For me, both 1 & 2 were true stories of mine - I used to be one of those people who would sneak out towards the end of a Body Balance class before they started savasana, I had no interest to meditate and couldn't even have the patience to sit through a yoga class!

Curiosity did get the better of me one day after reading an article on mediation, and seeing I couldn't sit for 5 minutes, I decided to send myself off to do a 10 day silence mediation retreat (Vipassana). With having no meditation experience there was many times at the start that I looked at others thinking I must be doing this wrong.

To be honest, I have and continue to struggle with my own daily practice, but having experiencing the benefits, I know it is time for me to dedicate myself to my own daily practice.

I would love to know if you are either have struggled with your own practice, are curious of trying mediation (and if so what is holding you back) or what keeps you dedicated to your own daily practice?

IT'S STARTING TO LOOK LIKE CHRISTMAS... ONLY 5 WEEKS TO GO!!

The festive season can be a joyful time of year &/or a stressful time of year! Below is some tips for the next week or two to plan ahead:

⭐️ Schedule in white space in your calendar - book ahead time for you during this period ensuring you have time to recharge over the coming weeks instead of continuing giving all of you leaving you exhausted.

🎄 Presents or Presence - some people love giving & receiving presents, for others this adds more pressure + anxiety, then there are some who don’t like doing presents for the sake of presents... so don’t be afraid to ask family what they prefer this year, or is the gift of each other’s time more than enough.

⭐️ Find ways to have fun - some struggle with keeping up the momentum and not slip straight into holiday mode, so for those tasks you aren’t as motivated to get through the back end of the year try thinking of some rewards/non rewards to attach them... be creative & have fun!

🎄 Cook, cater or dine out - family gatherings can be a lot of work, does the thought of cooking for the day bring you joy? Start thinking about this now, can you streamline & get everyone to bring a certain dish, or how about cater or go out and support one of your local cafes or restaurants who may love some extra business after this year.

⭐️ Be okay to say NO - if it’s not a hell yes or you’re taking on too much, stick to your boundaries and say no if timings etc for events don’t align, or limit the amount of time you can spend at functions by advising in advance you can only stay for an hour or so. Spend time with people & events that you enjoy, not the ones that make you feel drained.

Finally, for many reasons including those experiencing restrictions in place, this time of year can be hard for some who can’t be with family. For those who experience this as a harder season know it’s okay, actually I encourage, for you to reach out & speak to those close to you, share your feelings & ask for support. On the flip side, to those with family be mindful if there is a way to support those who may be feeling alone right now... the best gift you can give is kindness 💖

Whose story are you living out?

Have you ever had those times that no matter how much searching, reading and learning you do, you never can seem to find the answers.

Maybe that’s because the answers are for someone else, and instead we need to trust our own inner guidance.

Sometimes all we need is time and space to reflect... or sometimes we get given that kick up the butt to force us to reflect if we don’t listen to those whispers! (for those who can relate 😉)

I caught up with a friend today who has just done that. I was so excited and inspired to hear the changes she is making in her life after taking the time to check in with what was the right next steps for HER... and I can’t wait to hear her updates 💖

Have you been stopping to listen to your own heart and mind lately?

So grateful to enjoy a week exploring northern NSW coastline to relax.

Last year on this day I had arrived back in India for my second solo trip there to learn, today I arrived back home after just over a week getaway checking out Coffs Harbour, Byron & Port Macquarie for a relaxing break.

Taking time out for personal growth is something I love, but getting away for a holiday to relax and make more memories was just what I needed.

GOOD OR BAD, HARD TO SAY

A girl who believed in fairytales...

That belief carried all the way through as an adult, looking at the world through rose coloured glasses. Until one day there was a tug of war between her heart and her head, her heart closed up and her head said NO, I don’t believe anymore.

Then I remembered an ancient parable I came across recently and it reminded me it’s not the dreamer in me that is the problem, it’s the attachment to the outcome.

I feel this is so applicable and useful during these different times we are in right now so I had to share...

The ancient parable is about a farmer who lost his horse. The neighbours came over to say, "Oh, that's too bad." And the farmer said, "Good or bad, hard to say." Days later, the horse returns and brings with it seven wild horses. And neighbours come over to say, "Oh, that's so good!" And the farmer just shrugs and says, "Good or bad, hard to say." The next day, the farmer's son rides one of the wild horses, is thrown off and breaks his leg. And the neighbours say, "Oh, that's terrible luck." And the farmer says, "Good or bad, hard to say." Eventually, officers come knocking on people's doors, looking for men to draft for an army, and they see the farmer's son and his leg and they pass him by. And neighbours say, "Ooh, that's great luck!" And the farmer says, "Good or bad, hard to say."

Whilst I never want to lose the optimist in me, letting go of the craving or attachment to an outcome is so important and liberating, instead remember just to observe.
