MELANOMA OF THE SCALP - THE HIDDEN DANGER

Melanomas and other skin cancers can occur in the scalp and they are usually found late due to hair cover and the inability of the individual to check the scalp. Found early - this can be cured easily.

Hair dressers usually play a very important role in finding these lesions. The scalp should be checked during a full comprehensive skin check.

We are very excited to share that FNQH- Northern Beaches Medical and Skin Cancer Centre has successfully achieved accreditation status, which is a big milestone for a fledgling clinic that has weathered a number of storms.

Thank you to Tarlia Rajeswaran and her team for achieving this. Our clinic now offers services covering all aspects of General Practice with caring doctors who take their time looking after you, and a world-class team to ensure everything is done to improve patient outcomes.

We invest a lot of money and time to create community awareness around the dangers of skin cancers. 3D mole mapping - there is good evidence to say that Total Body Photography aka molemapping helps monitor your skin lesions, helps diagnose melanoma early and may help reduce unnecessary biopsies.

If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you need to ask your doctor if you need mole mapping.

1. Do you have more than 50-100 moles
2. Do you have a personal history of Melanoma
3. Do you have a family history of Melanoma
4. Previous Non Melanoma Skin Cancers
5. Compromised immunity
6. High risk skin type which burns easily
7. High risk sun exposure

The imaging takes 3 seconds and you will be provided with USB stick with your images. The doctor would be able to use the images to monitor your moles.

With a cloud based service coming shortly, you can share these images with your own doctor so he/she can use it to monitor your moles. Ask us how.

We recently celebrated Fathers Day. To show our appreciation to our fathers and how much of a super hero they are to their kids... It's time to encourage them to get a skin check.

A melanoma found early has more than a 95% cure rate. There is good evidence to show that men over 50 are more likely to die of melanoma than women of the same age.

Why Melanoma is so deadly for men and why it doesn't have to be:

1. Typically, but not always, the majority of outdoor jobs are performed by men - Luckily most workplaces now insist on sun protection.

2. Less than half (49%) of Australian men regularly seek shade to protect themselves from the sun during summer, and less than a third (29%) regularly use sunscreen - we need to do better with education and creating awareness amongst men.

3. Men are less likely to seek timely medical attention - this is where gentle or aggressive encouragement from family and friends would be helpful.

At FNQH Clinics, we offer free workplace UV skin assessment (not skin check) at workplaces and the most recent ones being at Bunnings and the Cairns City Council. This is to show the sun damage on the skin so as to encourage sun protection and skin checks.

FNQH Cairns- Integrated Melanoma Centre is the first Skin Cancer Centre to be selected to participate in this trial in Australia. This is due to the relentless perseverance and hard work by our world best team as they endeavour to improve patent outcomes in our community.

Our centres have state of the art cutting edge skin technologies to diagnose and treat skin cancers and there are normally not available in Skin Clinics which means we are able to offer our patients access to these equipment.

With our team - we are able to strive towards being a Centre of Excellence in Skin Cancer Diagnosis, Treatment, Research and Education.

These trials gives our community access to treatments that would normally not be available to regional communities. Our aim is to "close the gap" between the quality of skin cancer treatments between urban and regional communities.
