At the beginning of a new year, some of us almost always do the same unhelpful thing: make a check list of the past year's shortcomings.
We ruminate on what we didn't do, what chances we missed... We play over the "by now, surely I should have... (insert your favourite guilt tripping response).
We call them resolutions, but this is your inner critic clearing their throat, and setting you up for more guilt, shame, fear etc in 2026.
In place of resolutions, start something simple. Crack open that journal your Kris Kringle gifted you at Christmas (lighting the accompanying scented candle is optional), and journal your way into the New Year pondering on 5 things:
1. What in the last year are you proud of?
2. What did this year leave you yearning for?
3. What's causing you anxiety?
4. What resources, skills, and practices can you rely on in the coming year?
5. What are your wildest, most harebrained ideas and dreams?
These questions are exorcising, grounding, reassuring, pro active, motivating and celebratory. They remind us we have lived and survived a whole year. Remind us that we've learned things. That you have everything you need. That you can face what's coming. And, that you can dream audaciously.
The invitation is simple: respond to whatever resonates. Stay curious. Let the unfolding lead you into 2026 ✨😊✨
