Backyard breeding vs breeding for quality and standards.
Now FYI this isn’t an attack I like that this woman loves her horse, but I think it’s dangerous to promote this kind of practice. It is estimated to be over 58 million horses in the world both domestic and wild, and the sad thing about this number is the amount that go to bad homes, homes that don’t know anything and sometimes slaughterhouses. While some say the racing industry breeds a lot of horses, backyard breeding contributes the most as it’s unregulated with no consequence or care.
Now why is breeding for quality and standards so important? Quality and standards are critical for ensuring we produce healthy, longevity and functional horses, while also preventing overpopulation and unwanted or unsuitable horses. Qualities and standards include temperament, conformation and genetic health, and then may vary dependent on the breed’s standards for each horse.
Now I get it, I was 16 once and loved the idea of breeding my own horse and breaking in which I did with Snoopy (Houdinis Fire). Snoopy was a partbred Arab and not the prettiest 🙈 but he was a good horse to learn to break in and was fortunate enough to hear he went to a good home. And I’m sure what I did appears to be backyard breeding which is why I wish someone would have told me this so I could be more critical and think of my actions.
