This week is National Pain Week 2025 (21-27 July) and it’s an important opportunity to shine a light on chronic pain.

More than 3.6 million Australians live with chronic pain – it affects their work, relationships, sleep and overall wellbeing. It impacts their productivity, their time, their opportunities, and puts pressure on families.

We encourage you to read more about pain, and the many ways in which it presents, on the following websites:

https://chronicpainaustralia.org.au
https://www.painaustralia.org.au

Also check out this great TED-Ed video (featured on the Chronic Pain Australia website) which explores what pain is and how people can experience it differently:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eakyDiXX6Uc

If you are experiencing chronic pain, it's crucial to reach out and seek help from your healthcare support team – that’s what they are there for!

Some rural and remote Australians just try to ‘push through the pain’, but in many cases there are treatment options that can make a big difference to your quality of life.

Make the time this week to book an appointment with your local doctor to talk with them about your chronic pain, and how it can be treated or managed.

We're excited to announce the two latest recipients of our MDA National and RDAA Bursary for 2025 - Dr Sophie Fontaine and Dr Morgan See!

As always, huge thanks to our long-term and top-level (Platinum) partner, MDA National, for continuing to support not only RDAA but also these important bursaries!

Sophie is a medical intern with the Gippsland Rural Generalist Intern Training Program at the Bairnsdale Regional Health Service. She has key interests in Rural Generalist Medicine and Expedition Medicine.

Growing up on a bush property in Gippsland, Victoria, she always felt most at home in rural settings. Ultimately, she envisages working primarily as a Rural Generalist doctor while incorporating seasonal expedition work into her schedule.

Sophie plans to use her Bursary to complete the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) Rural Emergency Obstetric Training course which will help equip her with essential skills to manage obstetric emergencies in rural settings with greater confidence.

Next year, however, she’ll be stepping away from Clinical Medicine temporarily to complete rescue specialist training with the Danish Military!

Morgan is a medical intern at Orange Health Service in Central West NSW (part of the Western NSW Local Health District). He has key interests in Rural Medicine and Rural Ophthalmology.

Morgan was raised in Brisbane but his interest in Rural Medicine was first inspired by visits to his grandparents who were all from different areas of country Queensland.

He was then further inspired when undertaking a 12 month longitudinal placement at Grafton and Maclean Hospital in Northern NSW, and a university-sponsored four week placement with Lions Outback Vision in the Kimberley, WA.

He ultimately plans to live and work as an Ophthalmologist somewhere in regional Australia.

Morgan will be using his Bursary to regularly attend and assist at the Dubbo Public Eye Clinic over the next 12 months. This clinic is NSW’s main public eye clinic outside of Sydney.

Congratulations once again to both Sophie and Morgan, and huge thanks to MDA National for their ongoing support! 🤩

⚠️ And junior doctors, remember - there are still 3 bursaries on offer for the remainder of 2025! Be quick and apply! More details via the link above or the QR code below.

At our 2024 AGM, we adopted our updated Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

In committing to this RAP we are taking another step on our reconciliation journey, recognising that acknowledging, understanding and respecting the traditions, cultures and histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is fundamental to the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, communities and the whole population.

If you never, never go... you'll never, never know... whether you are one of the estimated 500,000 Australians currently unaware they have Type 2 Diabetes.

Not knowing whether you have Type 2 Diabetes - or are in the danger zone for developing it - puts you at risk from the serious health impacts associated with the disease, and denies you the chance to manage it early (and even prevent it) through healthier lifestyle choices.

National Diabetes Week 2025 starts this Sunday, and we're urging rural and remote Australians to make an appointment with their doctor for a diabetes health check.

At the very least, it's important to know what you've got - and unless you go and get a check-up, you won't know what you don't know...!

This week we are celebrating NAIDOC week!

NAIDOC week provides all of us an opportunity to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

This year's theme is "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," which celebrates achievements of the past and the bright future ahead.

At RDAA we recognise, celebrate and embrace Indigenous culture. Over the week we will be sharing some of our activities and actions in support of all First Nations peoples, but you too can get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country. Information on local events is available here:
