Reconciliation...it's not just an esoteric idea, or a ‘feel good’ box that is there to be ticked!

True reconciliation is not only the right path to take - it is also a ‘super power’ in delivering better health, education and other outcomes for First Nations people.

During National Reconciliation Week 2026, we are urging all Australians (including all of us in rural and remote communities) to get behind reconciliation, and work to genuinely achieve it - guided by the needs and advice of your own community’s First Nations people.

We can't just be bystanders on the sideline.

We all need to take action to make change, because true reconciliation will not happen otherwise.

There is also a special role for leaders in rural and remote communities – including doctors and other health professionals, as well as mayors and community group leaders – to drive forward reconciliation at a local level, recognising that many have embraced the importance of doing so.

Let's go All In for Reconciliation!

Supporting the next generation of Rural GPs and Rural Generalists! 🤩

Together with RACGP, we are super excited to announce the 11 recipients of our inaugural RACGP and RDAA Medical Student Bursary!

These bursaries help ease the cost of rural and remote placements, covering things like travel, accommodation, meals, education-related expenses, clinical wear, childcare and more... so the students can focus on what matters most - gaining hands-on experience in rural and remote communities, and of course seeing how rewarding a career in Rural Medicine can be!

Huge congratulations to our recipients:

🩺 Phoebe Doohan, The Australian National University

🩺 Ebony Higson, Charles Sturt University

🩺 Zoe Burns, Deakin University - Health

🩺 Lauren Navarrete, Flinders University

🩺 Tayla Roberts, Flinders University

🩺 Maeve Mitchell-Weir, Flinders University (NT Medical Program)

🩺 India Petherick-Cocking, JCU: James Cook University, Australia

🩺 Filbert Christone, Adelaide University

🩺 Keara Fitzgerald, The University of Queensland

🩺 Angus Johnston-Walker, The University of Western Australia

🩺 Georgia Masters, The University of Western Australia

We received an outstanding number of high-quality applications for the inaugural Bursary - the passion, commitment and insight shown by those who applied made selecting the final recipients no easy task.

We greatly look forward to following these students on their rural and remote placement journeys and beyond, to see the impact they’ll make in communities across Australia.

Doctors from across rural Victoria will be in Melbourne in force this weekend, as the Victorian Rural Health Conference – organised by the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria - RDAV – gets underway in what is a critical election year for Victoria’s rural patients, health services and hospitals.

Headlining discussions at this year’s conference will be the continuing stalemate from the Victorian Government in denying rural Victorians free emergency care at their local hospitals – while providing city-based patients with completely free care.

Our Senior Policy Advisor, Anita Rodrigues Macias, has been representing RDAA today at the Palliative Care Australia National Palliative Care Week Lecture, 'Rethinking dementia and end-of-life care'.

This is an incredibly important issue for the rural health sector, particularly given our ageing population - not only from a rural health workforce perspective, but for rural and remote patients and families as well.

Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia (at about 9.4% of all registered deaths).

While medical training in palliative care was born in a different time - with more of a focus on cancer - dementia related care and aged care is fast becoming a much bigger part of the palliative care space.

To this end, Rural Generalist doctors with advanced skills in Palliative Care will be an increasingly critical element of the rural and remote health workforce in the years ahead.

Today's guest speaker at the Lecture, Dr Michael Chapman (Director of Palliative Care at Canberra Hospital), told attendees that new approaches to policy, care and palliative care are urgently needed.
