The late, great comedian George Carlin once said, "The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything." Carlin’s words have resonated through the years, offering a satirical yet sharp critique of the political system.

His insight calls attention to the nature of power and control, reminding us that often, our so-called choices in a democracy are limited by forces much larger than us. It’s easy to feel powerless when it seems like the system is rigged, and Carlin’s reflections highlight the importance of being aware of the broader structures that shape our lives.

While his message may have been delivered with humor, it has a deep, thought-provoking undertone. The notion that we are owned by corporations and political interests is an uncomfortable truth, but it’s one that demands reflection. What can we do as individuals to reclaim agency over our choices and our lives?

Carlin’s words continue to encourage us to question the status quo, seek the truth, and push for real change. It’s a reminder that we can’t just passively accept the system; we need to actively engage and challenge it for the sake of our freedom. 🗣️💭

Chris Hedges presents a chilling assessment of American democracy in his statement. He suggests that what we call democracy today is nothing more than a veneer, a hollow shell that masks the collapse of true democratic ideals. To Hedges, the symbols of democracy—voting, freedom of speech, and the rule of law—are still in place, but they no longer function as they once did. They’ve been overtaken by corporate interests and oligarchic power.

Hedges draws a comparison to the fall of the Roman Empire, where outward appearances of prosperity and stability concealed a society in decline. Just as Rome was filled with grandeur and ceremony, modern America is still built on the language and iconography of democracy. But, according to Hedges, those in power have long since abandoned the principles that originally guided the country. Instead, the wealthy elite hold the real power, shaping laws and policies to serve their own interests.

The question then becomes: can this system be saved, or is it too far gone? Hedges doesn’t mince words in his diagnosis, but he also leaves room for hope. While he’s critical of the current state of affairs, his words serve as a warning and a call to action. If we recognize the extent of the problem, there’s still a chance to change it—but only if we are willing to confront the uncomfortable truth of what has happened to our democracy.

In this context, Hedges challenges us to look beyond the surface and question the foundations of the systems that govern us. Are we living in a true democracy, or is it a distorted version of the original ideal? This is the core of the issue, and it’s up to each of us to find the courage to ask the hard questions and take meaningful action. 🏛️⚖️

Ted Boller grave at Candelo cemetery January 2026. Quite difficult to read

Hello Bollers and associated families. Last weekend in Cooma a few of the Monaro Bollers were discussing "Uncle Ted". Many of you will know that Ted lived in Merimbula (opposite Boller Park) and that he was a giant in the Merimbula community.
I had an old photo of his grave in Candelo, which showed that the lettering is very worn. My brother Kel Boller drove to Candelo Cemetery today and sent me an updated photo. Ted's headstone definitely needs restorative work. I intend launching another appeal, the same as the one we ran for Georg Caspar Boller, Helena Luise (Kohler) Boller and Maria Luise Boller, to which many of you generously donated.

Perhaps, this time, we could restore the current headstone and perhaps include a plaque with a few more details about his role in the Merimbula Community?

Comments welcome. Mick Boller

Welcome to 2025 and Happy New Year. 170 years ago the Boller family from Reicholzheim were around 7 weeks into the journey to Twofold Bay. Cholera had already broken out on board. Perhaps Maria Luise and Helena had already died from disease by January 1855. No records were kept on when passengers on this ship died but some details are in family journals.

If I have missed the January birthday of a member of your family, please let me know.

There have been one or two suggestions about a 2025 Reunion. The last one at Candelo organized by Fran, Wayne, Carmel, Angie, Cheryl (and many others I am not aware of!) was a roaring success.

PS If you have had a photo taken with the new plaque in the Candelo Cemetery, please consider sending a copy to Sister Beatrice (aka Dulcie Boller) . I do not have her new address but I will find out.

Hello Bollers!! + all the associated family names as well. A couple of bits of news before I get to the birthdays.
(1) The $1,370 needed to pay for the memorial plaque for Georg Caspar, Helena Luise and Maria Luise has been received. Exact to the last dollar! Thank you to all those who contributed. A special mention to the 5 Jack Boller girls originally from "Parkview" Mogilla who contributed $250. Other individuals threw in $100. Fantastic response. If you were thinking of contributing and had not yet got around to it, perhaps send the $50 to your favourite cause (or wait for the next restoration project. We found Mary Agnes Bollers headstone at Candelo very difficult to read. Maybe we could get a quote for that project?
(2) The Frank Boller (1922-2008) branch had a wonderful celebration in Eden on Friday 15th November when Franks Grandson James Boller married Taylor Browne at the Seahorse Inn, Eden. James and Taylor chose Eden because of its huge historical importance as the site of the landing from the "Caesar" in March 1855 after the passengers spent 8 days waiting in Quarantine Bay.
