You can pass a standard hearing test and still struggle in busy cafés, meetings or family dinners.

That is why hidden hearing loss is getting more attention.

Unlike traditional hearing loss, hidden hearing loss may not show up clearly on a routine hearing test. You may hear sound, but still find speech unclear, especially with background noise. For many people, it feels like constant listening effort, fatigue after conversations, and repeatedly asking others to speak up.

Common signs can include:
• difficulty understanding speech in restaurants
• trouble keeping up in group conversations
• mental exhaustion after meetings
• feeling like everyone else hears better than you in noisy places

These concerns are real, even when results have been called “normal.”

Hidden hearing loss may be linked to changes in how sound signals are processed between the inner ear and the brain, which is why a more complete assessment can matter. Looking beyond basic tone testing can help uncover what is really happening and guide the right next steps.

If you have been told your hearing is fine but communication still feels hard, it may be time for a more thorough conversation with an audiologist.

⭐ Thank you for your kind words, Oliver.

It means a lot to our team to know that the care and support we provide truly make a difference. Jasmine is deeply committed to helping every patient hear their best, and feedback like this reminds us why we love what we do.

Here’s Oliver’s full review:

"I have been seeing Jasmine for my hearing needs for many years. She is always professional and a pleasure to work with.

During this time, as my hearing has declined and new hearing aid technology has become available, Jasmine has provided me with options for the latest hearing improvements.

We are currently trialling the next update of the latest hearing aids available, and I am confident Jasmine will guide me to the best possible outcome.

I don’t normally review but the guidance and care I have received from Jasmine and her team at Hills Audiology warrants a top rating review."

Thank you again, Oliver, for taking the time to share your experience. We truly appreciate your trust in Jasmine and the Hills Audiology team. 💛

If you’d like expert guidance for your hearing health, our team is here to help.

Children don’t always say “I can’t hear” — they show it.

It might look like:
• Not responding when called
• Asking for the TV or tablet to be louder
• Trouble following instructions
• Changes in attention or behaviour

For many families in Castle Hill and the Hills District, these signs can be easy to miss or mistaken for “just a phase”.

At Hills Audiology, paediatric hearing checks are gentle, age-appropriate, and designed to help parents understand what’s really going on — without pressure or unnecessary worry.

Early hearing checks support learning, confidence, and communication.

🦻 Hearing loss often starts long before it shows up on a hearing test.

Many people assume hearing loss begins when an audiogram becomes abnormal — but in reality, changes in clarity, listening effort and understanding speech often appear first.

If conversations feel harder to follow, especially in noise, or you feel more fatigued after listening, your hearing may already be working harder — even if test results look “normal.”

Early hearing assessments help identify subtle changes and support better long-term outcomes.
