As we continue raising awareness of Crohn’s & Colitis this May, it’s important to look beyond the diagnosis and focus on how IBD is actually managed day to day.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis (IBD) are chronic conditions that can change over time - with symptoms that vary in severity, frequency, and impact from person to person.

Because of this, management is highly individualised and often includes:
✔ Ongoing review with a gastroenterology specialist
✔ Consistent medication use, even during symptom-free periods
✔ Tracking symptoms to identify patterns and early changes
✔ Nutrition support to help maintain energy and reduce deficiencies
✔ Early review when symptoms change or flare

IBD is not just about flare-ups — it’s about long-term care, monitoring, and adapting treatment over time.

The goal is not only symptom control, but improving quality of life and reducing the impact of disease progression.

This May, we continue to raise awareness and encourage earlier understanding, earlier support, and ongoing care for those living with IBD.

A fantastic evening connecting with GPs across the North Shore for our Heartburn & Hernias CPD masterclass.

Held at The Fernery in Mosman, the session brought together a strong turnout of local GPs for an interactive, case-based discussion focused on the assessment, management, and referral of common upper gastrointestinal conditions such as reflux (heartburn) and hernias.

The evening featured presentations from our specialist team - Dr Farzan Bahin, Dr George Ermerak, and A/Prof Taylor - who shared practical, real-world insights to support earlier recognition, clearer diagnosis, and more effective treatment pathways for patients.

Sessions like this are an important part of improving care - helping strengthen collaboration between GPs and specialists so patients receive timely, coordinated, and high-quality management of digestive health conditions.

Thank you to all the GPs who attended and contributed to the discussion.

Bowel cancer can develop silently without symptoms.

That’s why screening matters - not when something feels wrong, but before it does.

Many people assume they’ll notice changes early, but bowel cancer often develops without clear warning signs in its early stages.

Screening is designed to detect those hidden changes early - when treatment is most effective and outcomes are significantly better.

It’s simple, at-home, and can identify concerns long before you would ever feel unwell.

Don’t wait for symptoms to be the signal. Act before they appear.

Each May marks Crohn’s & Colitis Awareness Month in Australia—a time to better understand what it means to live with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

For many people, IBD is a lifelong condition that goes far beyond occasional gut symptoms. It can involve pain, fatigue, urgent and frequent bowel movements, and unpredictable flare-ups that significantly impact daily life. Despite this, many people living with IBD often suffer in silence.

Awareness month is an important opportunity to change that—to encourage open conversations, earlier diagnosis, and better understanding of these conditions.

People living with IBD benefit from careful, ongoing medical support, with a focus on accurate diagnosis, symptom management, and long-term wellbeing. Care is tailored to the individual, as these conditions can vary significantly from person to person.

If you’re experiencing ongoing digestive symptoms or have been diagnosed with IBD, timely medical assessment can help guide the right next steps in care.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is more common than many people realise—and its symptoms can look different from person to person.

Among the most common signs are:

✔️ Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating, often in the lower abdomen and sometimes relieved after passing wind or a bowel movement
✔️ Alternating diarrhoea and constipation
✔️ Changes in bowel habits, including frequency, appearance, and consistency of stools
✔️ A feeling of incomplete emptying after going to the toilet
✔️ Loud stomach gurgling
✔️ Nausea
✔️ Mucus in stools
✔️ Altered breath odour in some cases

Symptoms can also vary between individuals. Many women notice changes around menstruation, during pregnancy, or across menopause, while symptom patterns in men may be underreported.

If these symptoms are ongoing or impacting your quality of life, it’s important to seek medical advice for proper assessment and support.

That uncomfortable feeling like food is stuck in your chest isn’t something to brush off.

It may be a sign of an oesophageal stricture—a narrowing in the oesophagus that can make swallowing difficult or even painful. Other important conditions that can be encountered include allergic conditions of the oesophagus, oesophageal dysfunction and oesophageal cancer.

The good news? Many of these conditions are treatable. For example, oesophageal dilation is a straightforward, effective procedure that helps open the passage, making eating and drinking comfortable again.

If something doesn’t feel right when you swallow, it’s worth getting it checked. Early assessment can make all the difference.
