Confused about the difference between prebiotics and probiotics?🤔

Let's break it down and digest some fun facts!🥬👏🥑

1. Probiotics🦠
These are the hard-working crew of healthy bacteria that live in our gut. Believe it or not, these tiny inhabitants play an enormous role in promoting gut health. Different bacteria play unique roles, including helping digest food, destroying 'bad' bacteria and assisting in the production of vitamins within the gut. Probiotics are naturally occurring in fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, kombucha, miso and sauerkraut. They can also be added during food manufacturing to products such as nut spreads and porridge. However, it is important to note that probiotics can be easily killed during production, storage or preparation of foods, therefore removing the health benefits.

2. Prebiotics🥦🧄🧅
Like all of us, probiotics cannot survive without food! That's where prebiotics come in - they are the non-digestible dietary fibres that are commonly referred to as the 'food' for probiotics. Prebiotics are nutrients that cannot be digested by humans and are instead used for energy by bacteria in the gut. Common prebiotics include fructo-oligosaccharides and galacto-oligosaccharides. Fructo-oligosaccharides are typically found in foods such as onion, chicory, garlic, asparagus, artichoke and banana, while galacto-oligosaccharides are more commonly occurring in legumes such as beans, lentils and chickpeas. Many wholegrains such as oats and whole wheat, also contain beneficial prebiotics!

So next time you're planning your meals or doing your weekly shop, make sure you include some of these gut health hero's!

This week is , and we're sending a big Butterfly thank you to all the dietitians who support those in eating disorder recovery.
🦋
While eating disorders are about more than just food, dietitians play a key role in eating disorder treatment. This could be through supporting individuals to heal their relationship to food and nutrition, reversing the impacts of malnutrition, developing eating behaviours that support recovery, and challenging diet culture and common dieting/food myths. Dietitians truly improve lives.
