The Common Good Au

The Common Good Au Together we can help people live healthier for longer. Our research areas are health issues that touch nearly everyone in some way. And we want you to join us.

The Common Good, an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, exists to help people live healthier, for longer. Through the power of the collective, we support and facilitate the work of incredible researchers who are dedicated to making breakthroughs in the areas of heart disease, lung disease, mental health and dementia. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a colleague, we all

know someone who is impacted by at least one of these conditions. In turn, that means we all know someone who can benefit from funding research in these areas. By funding research, we can provide hope to those suffering today, and for future generations to come. The impacts of our research ripple right across the nation and the world. We're on a mission to sustain the work of our brilliant researchers so that they can continue to make life-saving and life-changing medical breakthroughs. Research is a long game, so we need to support and fund as many hours as possible to ensure no stone is left unturned in any of our research areas. Every hour of research gets us one step closer to a medical breakthrough. We are also incredibly proud to support hospital innovation and patient care initiatives at both The Prince Charles Hospital and Caboolture Hospital.

New chairs offer calm and reduce sensory overload in Caboolture Hospital’s Paediatric ED and Ward🏥 🧒

Hospitals can be overwhelming for anyone, but some specially selected egg-shaped chairs have been added to the Caboolture Hospital’s Paediatric Emergency Department and Ward to help create a sense of security and safety for children with some sensory sensitivities.

The furniture, which was added in May, was funded through a partnership between The Common Good and Hospitals United for Sick Kids.

Nurse Practitioner Caboolture Paediatric Emergency Department, Rebekah Rawson, says the chairs are already making a huge difference for families and staff.

“Children are visibly more settled, and parents have expressed gratitude for the thoughtful addition.

“Recently, a young boy with autism who typically finds ED visits distressing was able to sit calmly in the egg chair, listening to music on his headphones. His mother said it was the first time he hadn’t tried to leave the department early due to sensory overwhelm.”

Rebekah added that Caboolture Hospital staff are proud to take this step toward a more sensory-aware environment.

We’re beyond excited to announce that next weekend, the Cycle of Giving returns to the Sunshine Coast - a truly special event that has brought the community together with generosity and heart since its inaugural ride in 2006.

"The Cycle of Giving encompasses several aims. It recognises that behind every heart transplant is a family who made a most selfless decision in their darkest moments. We ride in honour of their courage and in gratitude for the gift of life they have given to others", says Mary Long, who, alongside her late husband Mal, founded this extraordinary event nearly 20 years ago.

"We aim to support cardiac & transplant research by riding, donating or sponsoring research projects at The Prince Charles Hospital", Mary shares.

The legacy Mary and Mal have built over two decades is immeasurable. Their tireless advocacy and fundraising efforts have fueled groundbreaking research, improving outcomes for countless people living with heart conditions.

Over $4,000 has already been raised for this year’s event and we invite you to join this legacy by donating to the Cycle of Giving fundraising page👉www.tcg.org.au/cog25

A heartfelt thank you to Mary, Queen of Hearts, and the Sunshine Coast Bicycle Touring Club for their incredible dedication. We’ll all be cheering you on next weekend! 🚴‍♂️❤️

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we’ve raised over $120,000 for life-changing lung disease research through our recent tax appeal.

This funding will support the brilliant researchers based at The Prince Charles Hospital, who are investigating a fault in the DNA’s “protective cap” that may cause healthy lung cells to die - a discovery that could unlock earlier diagnosis and better treatment options for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and other deadly lung conditions.

To everyone who donated: thank you for making this possible. You're helping drive research that could change, and save lives.

And a special thank you to Bill who so bravely shared his personal story to highlight just how important this work is. ❤️

👋 Meet Katrina Beasley – our Chief Operating Officer.

Katrina has been with The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation for more than 16 years, and in that time, she’s seen the organisation grow from a humble team with big ambition, to a powerhouse of community-driven impact.

“What I’ve always loved about the Foundation is the direct impact we’re able to make,” Katrina says. “I’m especially proud of how we’ve supported the development of the researcher pathway. It’s where you can really see the long-term value of our work.”

Over the years, Katrina has helped shape some of our most significant milestones - from establishing a thriving social enterprise across The Prince Charles Hospital, Caboolture Hospital and Kedron Emergency Services, to expanding our support for research and patient care into Caboolture Hospital, and building hospital volunteer programs that continues to grow and thrive.

She also plays a key role behind the scenes, guiding our business operations and supporting staff, volunteers, researchers, volunteer board members and partners.

When asked what’s stood out most across her journey, Katrina says:
“It’s been the consistent focus to make a real impact for researchers and ultimately patients. That impact is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

This week is DonateLife Week - a cause that is close to our heart at The Common Good.

Right now, there around 1,800 Australians on the waitlist for a life-saving organ transplant.

We’ve had the privilege of hearing first-hand from people whose lives have been changed - or saved - thanks to the incredible gift of organ and tissue donation.

It takes just one minute to register as an organ and tissue donor at donatelife.gov.au or through your Medicare account.

Then, most importantly, talk to your loved ones about your wishes.

💗 Your decision could one day give someone a second chance at life.

Last week, we proudly hosted The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation’s 2025 Research Awards 🧪 - our annual event recognising the outstanding researchers who have received grant funding to drive the next wave of medical breakthroughs.

The Foundation awarded $2.4 million across 40 research grants, supporting projects that will improve and save lives. Grants were awarded across a range of categories, including Emerging Research, Innovation, Fellowships, PhD Scholarships, New Investigators, Collaboration, and Equipment.

What do these grants unlock? Time, tools, and funding - the critical ingredients researchers need to focus, investigate, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in health.

These grants are proudly funded by the Foundation. But the funding itself doesn’t come from one source - it comes from people ❤️. People who give in big ways, small ways, and often in deeply personal ways.

To every donor, supporter, and partner: thank you. You’ve made this possible.
And to our 2025 Research Award recipients - congratulations 🎉. Thank you for the work you do, and the future impact you will create.

Our Story

The Common Good is people powering medical discoveries.

The Common Good is an initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation established in 1986 under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, to inspire a generous community to fund life-saving and life-changing health research that tackles Australia’s most significant chronic diseases.

Last year we provided over $5 million in grants for innovative and sustainable medical research, helping devoted researchers to pursue smart research without having to spend the majority of their time writing annual research grants or worry that their work won't be followed through. Our aim is to continue to provide more than $5 million every year to stoke innovation, with the help of people like you.

When you join The Common Good, you’re joining a movement; and when you support a particular area of research, you’re joining a team of researchers, donors, volunteers, partners and everyday people who all care about finding a breakthrough just as much as you do.
