Huge congratulations to Carolyn and the Ubuntu Foundation on being named a finalist in the 2026 QLD Philanthropy Awards.

“I am, because you are.”

The philosophy of Ubuntu is rooted in connection, the understanding that our humanity is tied to one another. It’s a belief that when we reconnect with ourselves, with each other, with our communities and with nature, we create a world that works better for everyone. That vision is something Carolyn and the Ubuntu Foundation live and lead every single day.

At RHRF, we are incredibly grateful for the way Carolyn and the Foundation continue to champion connection, kindness and innovative solutions that create real impact in rural and regional communities. Their support goes far beyond philanthropy, it is deeply human, thoughtful and grounded in genuine care for people and community wellbeing.

This recognition is so incredibly deserved, and we are proud to celebrate it alongside you.

Congratulations to all of our incredible grant recipients! We cannot wait to see the fabulous things you will do 🎉🎉

Introducing Our People!!

We are so proud to have the Hon. Bronnie Taylor as our Inaugural Ambassador.

Bronnie has spent her life working in and for regional communities. Before entering public life, she was a registered nurse for nearly 20 years, specialising in cancer and palliative care. She was among the first nurses with the McGrath Foundation and later served as Director of Cancer Services for the Southern NSW Local Health District. These experiences shaped her deep commitment to improving health outcomes for people living outside major cities.

Elected to NSW Parliament in 2015 as a member of the NSW Nationals, Bronnie went on to serve as Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Women, Minister for Regional Youth, and the state’s first Minister for Regional Health. During her time in government, she championed policies and programs that strengthened mental health services, improved access to care, and supported regional families and communities.

Today, Bronnie continues to advocate for regional Australia through her leadership roles. She currently serves as Chair of Motherland Australia, is a member of Chief Executive Women, a Non-Executive Director with Boyce, a board member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, and a political advisory board member for Women for Election.

Bronnie brings genuine lived experience of rural life and a passion for strengthening regional communities. Known for her hands on approach, she often rolls up her sleeves to support farm work, local events, and grassroots initiatives, reflecting her belief that strong communities grow when people contribute their time, energy, skills, and ideas.

Her experience across health, leadership, and community advocacy will help strengthen the Foundation’s mission to improve health outcomes for people living in rural and regional Australia.

This is Rural Health Research Foundation.

Funding health research and community-led innovations that deliver real-world impact for rural, regional and remote Australia.

The icon we created represents connection. Connection to research, community organisations, partners, grants, funding and the bigger picture of rural health and wellbeing. It’s all about connecting the dots. It also forms an abstract ‘R’, which we love.

We’re really looking forward to seeing where RHRF work leads and the impact it will have.

They’ve also just launched The Carolyn Vincent Ubuntu Foundation Community Innovation Grant, with applications closing 30 March. What could $5,000 do in your community? Worth a look: https://ruralhealthresearchfoundation.com.au/open-grants

🎙️This week I joined ABC Local Radio host Fi Poole to share an update on our Foundation, the progress so far and how we are working with others to improve health outcomes for regional communities. Here’s a 50-second clip where I talk about why it’s so important to fund research translation, so key learnings don’t just stay on the shelf.

The First Chapter – The Idea

Sometimes all it takes is a conversation and a willingness to be part of something different for an idea to spark into life. That’s exactly what happened when leading health researchers and community experts came together to imagine what could be possible if regional areas had the same investment, opportunities, and support for innovation as our cities.

One point in that conversation hit hard: metro areas have strong charitable foundations sitting alongside their health services, districts, community org’s, and uni’s. These foundations act as vehicles to attract investment, foster collaboration, and showcase success stories. They do this so well that around 96% of research funding flows to major cities, leaving just 4% for the rest of us.

But here’s our superpower: we already have researchers and experts deeply embedded in their communities, constantly finding better ways to improve health and wellbeing. They exist—and I’m meeting them 👋! I’m blown away by their commitment and drive. They believe in their work, but what they need is financial backing to keep translating their research into real-life solutions, more visibility to build awareness, and a bold, unapologetic regional advocate who isn’t afraid to ask for investment.

That’s why the Rural Health Research Foundation was born.

With the backing of our Chair, Peter Treseder, board and led by Cass Wilson (me!), the task of building a not-for-profit foundation from the ground up began to take shape. Our Mission, Vision, Approach, and Values were co-designed with researchers, health workers, regional leaders, and people with lived experience, ensuring we got it right from the start.

Now that the groundwork is set, the real work begins…
