Hey everyone,

Been awhile between posts and that has mostly been to the fact that we have been working hard on our next phase of business growth and are excited to confirm we will be opening up some more clinic time in a new clinic space at:

- 148 Smith Street, Collingwood

We will be commencing in this space on Mondays and Thursdays, with Wednesdays opening up in the hopeful near future dependent on therapist availability.

Just wanted to do a quick post about a sticking point I have seen this year in the health and wellness space.

Alot of people adopting the latest health trends, influencer lead interventions or even evidence-based literature and not getting the benefits from these interventions or strategies that they feel they should be.

There is no suprises here, the number one rule with health and wellness optimisation and treatment is that everyone is different and you can't simply just adopt something that has worked for someone else and expect the same results.

Not trying to put anyone off adopting any health positive behaviours here, just saying some nuance and individualisation is needed.

There is no way a post can tell you what that looks like, but engaging with a health practitioner can assist in guiding you towards your ideal or at least better health management plan.

Get in contact to see if we can assist in your physical rehabilitation or movement strategies today.

Stronger Joints, Smarter Movement 💪🏽✨
Your joints weren’t designed to thrive on high-intensity workouts — they need low-impact movement to build resilience, restore function, and reduce sheering forces across the joint surfaces. 🏃‍♂️➡️🚶‍♀️

When you engage in low-impact exercise like walking, swimming, cycling, or controlled bodyweight movements, you:
✔️ Strengthen connective tissue (ligaments & tendons need gentle loading to adapt)
✔️ Improve joint lubrication (motion nourishes cartilage & keeps joints mobile)
✔️ Enhance stability (slow, controlled movements activate deep stabilizers)
✔️ Reduce inflammation (lower-impact activity supports recovery & longevity)

🔹 Think of movement as medicine—but the right dose matters. If your only exercise is high-intensity, you might be missing out on foundational joint health that protects you long-term. Balance is key. ⚖️

How to incorporate more low-impact movement?
🌿 Start your day with a morning walk 🚶
🌊 Swap a HIIT session for a swim or yoga 🧘‍♂️
🦵 Focus on slow, controlled movements in strength training

Remember: Longevity in movement starts with sustainability. Build strong joints without breaking them down. 💯

What’s your favorite way to add low-impact movement into your routine? Drop it below! ⬇️✨

How are those New Year's Resolutions going?

Are you finding it difficult to implement new behaviour change or is change not even on your radar?

Showing up for yourselves is one of the hardest pursuits of being a human being and although we may have the best of intentions, our actions can regularly fail to achieve what we really desire.

Also, this is not designed to be a triggering post but more to get you thinking about how little actions, behaviours, thoughts and words can assist in setting down the foundations of achieving greatness.

In the turbulent times that we are currently witnessing, the saying " Health is Wealth" couldn't be any more important. Now, there isn't going to be any practical advice in this post but more a thought provocation.

How will you show up for yourself this year? What small and seemingly insignificant actions and behaviours will you change to follow your true purpose and desires.

Looking forward to growing together through 2025 and beyond to a happier, healthier and sustainable future.

Decentralizing your health is about reclaiming control over your well-being by aligning more closely with nature and making empowered decisions. In a world where we often rely on healthcare professionals to "fix" us, decentralizing shifts the focus to a more proactive, holistic approach. This means tuning into your body, syncing your daily routines with natural rhythms—like sunrise, sunset, and seasonal changes—and fostering habits that promote long-term wellness.

By decentralizing your health, you take responsibility for understanding what your body needs and how it interacts with the environment. Natural cycles, such as eating seasonal foods, getting sunlight, or practicing grounding techniques, play a key role in supporting physical and mental well-being. This doesn’t mean rejecting modern medicine or working in isolation. Instead, it's about collaborating with healthcare professionals in a balanced, empowered way.

When you bring your body and life into harmony with nature, you become an active participant in your health journey. Healthcare professionals serve as guides, but the choices you make, based on your own knowledge and the wisdom of nature, steer the course. This fosters a deeper sense of self-awareness and leads to more sustainable health and well-being.

Health truly equals wealth because it is the foundation of everything we do in life. Without good health, even the greatest material wealth or success loses its value. Our physical and mental well-being allows us to engage fully in our work, relationships, and passions. It’s often said that we only appreciate health when it’s compromised, but by prioritizing our wellness, we can thrive in all areas of life.

Good health supports productivity, creativity, and emotional stability, all of which are essential for personal and professional growth. When we take care of our bodies through exercise, nutritious food, and rest, we not only increase our longevity but also improve the quality of each day. We’re more energized, focused, and capable of achieving our goals.

Health also impacts our financial wealth. When we neglect our well-being, medical expenses and loss of productivity can drain our resources. On the other hand, investing in a healthy lifestyle pays dividends by reducing healthcare costs and enhancing our ability to work and enjoy life.

In essence, health is the true currency that enables us to experience life’s riches—whether that’s time with loved ones, pursuing passions, or achieving success. It is the ultimate form of wealth.

Pain is often seen as an enemy, something to avoid at all costs. However, reframing pain as a teacher can transform how we respond to it. Pain is the body's protective mechanism, signaling potential harm or overuse that could lead to tissue damage. It’s like a red flag, alerting us to pay attention, adjust our actions, and avoid further injury.

Instead of seeing pain as something purely negative, we can view it as a guide, showing us where we need to focus in our health and wellness journey. Pain encourages us to slow down, reflect on our movements, and assess areas of imbalance. It often points to underlying weaknesses or dysfunctions that need addressing, whether through strengthening, stretching, or simply resting.

By listening to pain and understanding its message, we can prevent small issues from turning into bigger, chronic problems. This perspective encourages a more holistic approach to well-being, one that emphasizes self-awareness and proactive care. Pain becomes not an adversary but a partner in the process of healing, helping us fine-tune our physical habits, improve our body mechanics, and ultimately lead a healthier, more resilient life.

Pillow design, comfortable sleeping and prevention or treatment of neck pain is a fairly contested topic in the physiotherapy space. Evidence encourages the use of pillows made of rubber, latex or spring to assist in preventing mechanical neck pain.

What about determining the pillow's height?

A method that was studied in Japan, called the Step up for Spinal Sleeping method (SSS method) had demonstrated some positive results in terms of improving neck pain presentations. It involves satisfying three criteria:
- Neutral spinal alignment in side lying
- 15 degree anterior tilt of head (forward tilt) in supine (flat on your back)
- Able to roll smoothly from Right to Left side lying

I personally and professionally find that pillows are fairly subjective and some of us find the old, well worn and used pillow to be most comfortable whilst finding expensive orthopaedic or posture focused pillows to be uncomfortable. My advice, is to use some of this evidence to assist but ultimately it will come down to a more subjective experience to determine which pillow is best for your individual situation.

As per usual, it is always best to consult a movement or posture professional prior to purchasing any pillows if you are attempting to assist in the management of musculoskeletal pain disorders.

If you’re dealing with tennis elbow (lateral epicondylalgia), finding the right treatment is key to recovery and getting back to your normal activities. Tennis elbow is caused by overuse or strain, leading to inflammation and pain around the outside of the elbow.

Load management is crucial in recovery. Gradually reducing stress on the elbow through activity modification helps to prevent further damage while allowing healing to take place. Avoid overloading the tendons, but stay active with lighter, pain-free movements.

Manual therapy can also be effective, helping to improve blood flow, reduce tension, and promote healing through targeted massage and joint mobilizations.

A cornerstone of treatment is eccentric exercises, which strengthen the muscles and tendons by focusing on the lengthening phase of movement. This helps to rebuild tissue resilience and prevent future injuries.

Lastly, shockwave therapy is a non-invasive option that promotes tendon healing by increasing blood circulation and stimulating cell repair. It’s particularly useful for chronic cases that haven’t responded to other treatments.

A combined approach that includes these methods can accelerate recovery and help manage tennis elbow more effectively, reducing pain and restoring function in the long run.

Reciprocal inhibition is a fundamental neurological principle that can significantly enhance the effectiveness of muscle stretching. This process occurs when one muscle group, known as the agonist, contracts, while its opposing muscle group, the antagonist, relaxes. By engaging the agonist, the nervous system inhibits the antagonist's ability to contract, thereby facilitating a more efficient stretch.

For example, when you contract your quadriceps (agonist) during a hamstring stretch (antagonist), the hamstrings naturally relax due to reciprocal inhibition. This allows for a deeper and safer stretch, as the opposing muscle tension is reduced. This method not only improves flexibility but also prevents potential muscle strain, as it encourages controlled and functional movement patterns.

Reciprocal inhibition is particularly useful in active stretching techniques, where muscle activation is involved, as opposed to passive stretching. Engaging the agonist muscles helps the body develop strength and stability while enhancing mobility. Regular use of this principle in stretching routines can improve range of motion, support joint health, and promote better muscular balance. Additionally, it reduces the likelihood of injury by promoting proper neuromuscular coordination, making it an effective strategy for both rehabilitation and athletic performance optimization.
