Allow me to reintroduce myself!

I’m Ben, a passionate physiotherapist originally from Ireland, and I’ve been calling Melbourne home for the past 7 years.

I have been a physio for the last 10 years working in private practice and sports in Australia and at home. I truly love being a physio and helping people achieve their health and fitness goals whether that be a return to running or exercise or living a more active pain free life.

I believe in lifelong learning so I always strive to stay up to date with the latest research in rehab to provide my patients with the best possible service.

I have been active throughout my life playing basketball, Gaelic football and going to the gym. I also love to run and am currently training for my next Marathon in Queenstown this November.

With this I have had my fair share of injuries so I understand first hand how they can impact not just your body, but your sense of identity and overall happiness.

Do we offer hands-on treatment? Absolutely. But is it the solution to all your problems? Probably not.

We incorporate manual therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to reduce pain and create a window of opportunity to get you moving and load your tissues effectively.

Pain and stiffness often stem from the body’s adaptations to past pain or injury. A thorough assessment is crucial to identify which tissues aren’t functioning effectively, paving the way for a long-term solution to your pain.

A question I get frequently asked by my patients is, can stress contribute to their pain or injury?

All pain and injuries are multifactorial and stress can definitely be a contributing factor. This has been shown in the literature many times

When we are stressed this activates the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism and the body will perceive real or imagined threat. This response is crucial for survival but chronic exposure can have negative effects.

A study carried out by Pensgaard et al. In 2018, followed professional female soccer players over a season and found that there was an increased rate of acute and overuse injuries when stress levels were reported to be high.

Exercise can be great to relieve stress but it’s probably not the best idea to beat your quickest 5km run or 1rm lift if you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

The last side provides some ideas to regulate the nervous system and bring us out of “fight or flight” and back to “rest and digest.”
