At Coolangatta SLSC, we know that being part of a surf club is about more than patrols, training, or carnivals — it’s about community, connection, and looking out for one another. At Coolangatta YOU matter.🌊🤝

This R U OK? Day (Thursday 11 September), we’re reminding our members, nippers, families, and friends that a simple conversation can make a big difference. Asking “Are you OK?” and really listening can be the first step to helping someone through a tough time.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and in our club family, no one should feel like they’re facing challenges alone. By checking in with your mates on the beach, in the clubhouse, or even over a coffee, you’re helping build a stronger, more supportive community.

Let’s keep the conversations going — not just today, but every day. 💛

💚 National Child Protection Week 💚

At Coolangatta SLSC , we know our nippers are the heart of our future. Their voices matter, and their safety is everyone’s responsibility.

This National Child Protection Week (7–13 September), we’re proud to stand with NAPCAN and this year’s theme: “Every conversation matters: shifting conversation to action.”

From teaching surf safety, to creating a safe space for kids to learn and grow, every action we take makes a difference. Together, we’re building an inclusive and protective community where all children feel safe, supported and heard 🙌.

This Saturday, 6th September is our final Nipper Sign on for the season! If you were considering joining Cooly Nippers, now is the time! We would love to see you all this Saturday!

🌊 Joel Kinneally: Volunteer & Trainer of the Year! 🌊

Along with our amazing Club of the Year win at the SLSQ Awards of Excellence, Joel Kinneally was also awarded two awards -

🏆 Queensland Volunteer of the Year
🏆 Queensland Trainer of the Year – for the second year in a row!

Joel is a fountain of knowledge and experience and is always willing to share his wisdom across all areas of our club – from training and education to youth development, IRBs, Nippers and more. His impact is felt across every part of Coolangatta SLSC.

Joel is a patrol captain, a leading trainer and assessor, helps our school partnership program with their training, assists with coaching our IRB team, is at Nippers coaching every Sunday and assists with skills maintenance each year! Joel’s dedication, passion, and countless hours of service make him an invaluable part of Coolangatta SLSC and the wider Surf Life Saving community.

Coolangatta SLSC joins our wider Surf Life Saving community in mourning the sudden passing of SLSA President John Baker AM ESM. JB's leadership, dedication and passion will leave a lasting impact on our organisation. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, the SLSA team and Brighton SLSC 💛❤️

The Surf Life Saving community is today mourning the sudden passing of Surf Life Saving Australia President John Baker AM ESM.

John, ‘JB’ was the seventh President since SLSA was established in 1907, serving in the role since 2021 after spending 14 years on the national board.

Surf Life Saving Australia CEO, Adam Weir, said John’s passion for Surf Life Saving was felt at all levels of the organisation and his loss will be felt by many.

“Today is terrible for our Surf Life Saving community, losing one of our most dedicated volunteers and leaders.

Beyond the accolades and awards, John was a beloved member of our Surf Life Saving community and will be missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Jo and his family and friends at this time,” he said.

Surf Life Saving SA President and National Director, Sarah Cutbush, said that the South Australian Surf Life Saving community had been devastated by the news.

“This is such a loss for our movement - of a leader, and of a friend.

“Our condolences go out to Jo and his family and friends, as well as Brighton SLSC - we will join you in keeping JB’s memory and legacy alive.”

Its World Drowning Prevention Day! Take a look at some of the top tips for staying safe in the water listed in the Point Danger Branch Post! 🌊

World Drowning Prevention Day is held annually on the 25th of July.
This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offers life-saving solutions to prevent it.
🌊To stay safe around water, Surf Life Saving urge all Australians to:

✅Always supervise children in, on and around water
✅Learn swimming, water safety and lifesaving skills (join a club now!)
✅Wear a lifejacket when boating, rock fishing or paddling
✅Swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags ❤️💛
✅Avoid alcohol and drugs around water
