Learning a new dance might mean being explicit about the new moves. It’s hard. It’s uncomfortable. Gosh, it’s worth it.

Using scripts can give language structure during emotional moments.

This example is a common one.

Often people want help from others and when the other person offers it, it’s not the help they were seeking.

Sometimes we need a listener.
Sometimes we need help problem solving.
Sometimes we need co regulation.

If you know what you need (this can be tricky!) asking for the other person to play a role can support their “help”.

One of the things I appreciate most about Bowen’s work is the reminder to look beyond the roles we assign people in families. Particularly during conflict, stress, burnout or heightened emotion, it can become easy to see one person as “the problem”, one as “the good one”, one as “too emotional”, “too difficult”, “too sensitive” or “the fixer”.

But families are systems.
People respond to each other, shape each other, protect each other, and sometimes hurt each other…often while trying to meet needs, manage anxiety, or stay connected.

Some things I’ve said this week as a clinical family therapist + speech pathologist.

Not because I have all the answers. Absolutely not.
I just try to offer a space to think differently.

Family therapy isn’t about finding the “problem person”.
It’s about slowing down long enough to notice the patterns, roles, stress, communication and relationships that everyone is caught inside of.

Sometimes the issue isn’t one person.
Sometimes it’s the cycle the family keeps getting pulled into.

Family therapy helps people have a space where they can move from
blame → understanding
reacting → responding
and surviving together → actually connecting.

Boundaries aren’t just about saying “no.”

Sometimes boundaries feel hard and there are so many reasons for this.

So when you start communicating boundaries, remember:

• Get clear on what the boundary is protecting: your energy, capacity, values, safety, or wellbeing.
• Expect some discomfort. A healthy boundary can still feel uncomfortable at first.

Boundaries aren’t about controlling others.
They’re about communicating what you need to feel respected and sustainable in relationships.
