Listening to a young person, and I mean really listening, (and not speaking), has a profound impact on that young person's well-being and development. By actively listening, you communicate respect for their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, fostering a sense of validation and understanding. However difficult this seems - that is, a parent/adult not talking (haha) - this approach encourages open communication and strengthens the bond between you, creating a safe space for your young person to express themselves authentically. It also builds their confidence and self-esteem, as they feel empowered to share their perspectives and tackle challenges with your support.
Ultimately, a parent who listens more than speaks not only fosters a healthier relationship with their child, but also equips their teenager with strong communication skills and emotional resilience for the future. Let's be that kind of parent for our kids!
