It seems you have been looking for me!

I have been a tiny bit absent on the social media as late and for that I apologise! But I am still working hard behind the ever watchful eyes of the web. But let’s get you up to speed with some recent changes in the Mind Yourself world.

I have now moved fully online for my clients, and you will see my availability easily when you jump on the Stan store link in the bio. Also being online has allowed me to open up some later appointments if you need some flexibility in your world!

Quicksand

For some unknown reason, I was always terrified at the thought of coming across quicksand - and genuinely thought it was going to be an issue I would face in my adult life. Now seeing as I grew up in western Queensland (no sand, just lots of dirt) - I have no idea where this fear came from (pretty sure ‘The Neverending Story’ movie scene with Atreyu trying to get his horse out of the swamp had something to do with it though)

This fear was so real that I even knew the action plan you needed to follow if you got stuck! For those curious, this is some things you need to do - Try and lean back to disperse your weight, don’t struggle and thrash, but use slow controlled movements to get one limb out at a time, most important stay calm and call for help. Pretty simple right?!

So why am I telling you this? On a hypnotherapy page nonetheless?

Turns out quicksand actually is a problem we face as adults - we just may know it as overwhelm.

You can be happily traipsing through life enjoying the journey and then out of nowhere you are sinking, and like most of us your first instinct is to fight it, push through it and ignore the heavy feeling pulling you down, and it usually isn’t until you are up to your neck in it, that you recognise something isn’t right.

So what do we do?

We use our previously useless knowledge about how to escape quicksand of course!

1. Disperse the weight: you don’t have to carry the world on your shoulders, learn to lean on healthy support tactics and people to take the weight off
2. Slow down and stop thrashing: learn to find your calm even in the hard moments, you can’t make a good decision from a place of pure panic
3. One limb at a time: let’s work on one stuck thing at a time, little by little it will get easier until you are able to just pop right out the other side
4. Call for help: you don’t have to do this alone. Find the healthy people (friends/family/professionals) that lift you up and get you back to safety - then you are free to do the inner work needed so you don’t get stuck again.

If you have found some quicksand in your life, it can hard to think you will ever feel any different or ever get out of this stuck place you are in, know there is hope, sometimes it just takes a little imagination, a little help and you can get free again.

Calling all Mum’s!!

Mum life is exhausting and exhilarating and every emotion in between! Throw in school holidays, Christmas and the rest - it’s a good recipe for Mum’s being burnt out…

There are so many things in this world that try to grab your attention. We seem to roll from one set of sales to the next in ever increasing speed, Black Friday, cyber Monday, Christmas, Boxing Day and on and on it goes.

Just today in the shops, right there next to plum pudding (quickly going out of date) were freshly baked hot cross buns.

Now some may say what’s the harm in that! It’s just food and doesn’t mean a thing! And you would be right - in some ways - it is just food, and a delicious one at that! But it is the underlying message it sends our brain that I struggle with.

You see as we are only just recovering from Christmas and preparing for the new year, return of school etc. those little innocent buns sitting there instantly send your brain and attention months into the future and all the way up to Easter. It takes you out of the here and now and catapults you forward in time, dragging your attention and effort too far out.

One of many things this can do is create overwhelm, a feeling of time slipping away without achieving all you hope and plan to. You can start to develop anxiety based thinking as life jumps and races ahead without control.

So how do we stop this? How do you gain control when you are constantly bombarded with messages telling you to “look here!”, “buy that” and “don’t forget to hustle!!”

Stop. And just breathe for a minute.

In order to gain control we need to sort through the mess and get a solid plan. Do you have your short and long term goals set? To gain control over where we are headed - we first need to know where we are going! (And no, winning the lotto doesn’t count as your short term goal) if you have these set, they can help keep you grounded in the now, but still motivated to grow.

Next up do you have enough in your personal mental toolkit to get you through the hard days? No matter who we are and what we achieve there are days that test us. The difference between those that thrive and those that just survive, is all about what you have within you to get through. If you don’t know what I am talking about, or know that your toolkit could do with some upgrading - it’s time to reach out. Find someone you trust and connect with and learn the skills you need to get you living your life your way - as some may say, you can have your hot cross buns and eat them too - just make sure it’s on your terms.

I shared this to my stories recently, but think it deserves another go around the block.
This is so eloquently said and I think resonates with a lot of us right now.
It feels like a lifetime has been lived this year, and some are feeling it more than others.
So during the chaos towards the end of the year, find your space in whatever way you can, reach out to those that bring you peace and remember to breathe.

A gentle reminder about why you are utterly exhausted…

No one I know began this year on a full tank. Given the vicious onslaught of the previous two years (let’s just call it what it was) most of us dragged ourselves across the finish line of 2021… frazzled, spent, running on aged adrenaline fumes…

We crawled into 2022 still carrying shock, trauma, grief, heaviness, disbelief… The memories of a surreal existence…

And then it began… The fastest hurricane year we could ever have imagined. Whether we have consciously processed it or not, this has been a year of more pressure, more stress, and a race to “catch up” in all departments… Every. Single. One. Work, school, sports, relationships, life…

Though not intentionally aware, perhaps hopeful that the busier we are, the more readily we will forget… the more easily we will undo the emotional tangle… the more permanently we will wipe away the scarring wounds…

We can’t.

And attempts to re-create some semblance of “normal” on steroids while disregarding that for almost two years our sympathetic nervous systems were on full alert, has left our collective mental health in tatters. Our children and teens are not exempt. The natural byproduct of fighting a hurricane is complete and utter exhaustion…

So before you begin questioning the absolutely depleted and wrung-dry state you are in- Pause. Breathe. Remind yourself of who you are and what you have endured. And then remind yourself of what you have overcome.

Despite it all, you’re still going. (Even on the days you stumble and find yourself face down in a pile of dirt).

Understanding brings compassion…

Most of the world’s citizens are in need of a little extra TLC at the moment. Most are donning invisible “Handle with care” posters around their necks and “Fragile” tattoos on their bodies…

Instead of racing to the finish line of this year, tread gently. Go slowly.

Amidst the chaos, find small pockets of silence. Find compassion. Allow the healing. And most of all… Be kind. There’s no human being on earth who couldn’t use just a little bit more of the healing salve of kindness.
