Illawarra Urgent Response is deeply saddened by the news released today from Marine Rescue NSW regarding the tragic loss of two volunteers who lost their lives while responding to a vessel in distress.

Our thoughts and condolences are with the families and loved ones of the two fallen members, as well as the third, as yet unidentified, victim involved in this heartbreaking incident.

At Illawarra Urgent Response, many of our personnel proudly serve as volunteers across a range of organisations, including within the emergency services sector. Today’s events are felt deeply across our team and the broader emergency services community. This is a sobering reminder of the dedication, selflessness, and courage shown by those who step forward to help others—often in the most dangerous of circumstances.

We acknowledge the immense risks both volunteer and career emergency service workers face in the line of duty, and we stand in solidarity with all those impacted.

Lest we forget the sacrifices made in service to others.

May 4th is celebrated as St Florians Day. St Florian is the Patron Saint of Firefighters. Honouring all Firefighting crews past present in our country and around the globe. Particularly honouring our crew whom are trained fire-fighters. May we always understand the importance of the role whether paid or voluntary. May we be safe vigilant and uphold the values of St Florian today and ever more.

Today we hope everyone enjoyed following along with us as we reflected on what unfolded 111 years ago at Gallipoli — a day that forever shaped our nation.

ANZAC Day remains a stark reminder to slow down, reflect, and remember those who sacrificed everything for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is a day to unite as one nation, and we hope everyone found time to do just that — whether at dawn services, marches, or in quiet reflection.

Today we especially remember some of the sons of the Illawarra who answered the call, including Gustaf (George) Dahlstrom of Woonona, Lt Col Roy Morell of Wollongong, and the Alderson brothers of Woonona, among so many others from our region who served with courage. (Region Illawarra)

“They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”

Lest We Forget.

From all of us at Illawarra Urgent Response — thank you to those who served, those who still serve, and those who keep the ANZAC spirit alive.

🇦🇺 Why Gallipoli Matters to Australia

25 April 1915 was one of the first major military actions fought by Australians as a young nation.

Though Gallipoli was not a military victory, it became a defining chapter in Australia’s story — symbolising courage, sacrifice, mateship and endurance.

Many see Gallipoli as where the ANZAC spirit was born.

That spirit lives on.

Lest We Forget.

🌇 ANZAC Timeline | Night Falls on Gallipoli

By evening and into the night, the wounded crowded the beach, trenches deepened, and exhausted soldiers held their positions.

A decision was made: they would stay.

The first day had cost dearly — but the foothold held.

From this day, a legacy was born.

They shall grow not old…
Lest We Forget.

🛡️ ANZAC Timeline | Digging In (2:00–6:00 PM)

As Ottoman counterattacks increased, the ANZACs dug in.

What began as an assault was rapidly becoming trench warfare.

Shallow trenches, stubborn defence, and extraordinary resolve held the line through the afternoon.

The beachhead survived.

Lest We Forget.

🪖 ANZAC Timeline | Holding the Line (10:00 AM–2:00 PM)

By midday on 25 April 1915, the landing hung in the balance.

Some commanders even considered evacuation.

Yet reinforcements kept arriving, and those on the ground held firm, consolidating a fragile foothold under relentless pressure.

Against the odds, they endured.

Lest We Forget.

⚔️ ANZAC Timeline | Morning Battle Intensifies (6:00–10:00 AM)

As more troops landed, Ottoman resistance strengthened.

Counterattacks led by forces associated with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk met the ANZAC advance, and the struggle for the high ground became desperate.

Heavy casualties mounted, but so too did stories of mateship, courage and endurance.

Lest We Forget.

⛰️ ANZAC Timeline | The First Assaults Inland (4:30–6:00 AM)

As dawn broke, ANZAC troops pushed inland through unforgiving cliffs and gullies.

Fierce fighting erupted around positions later known as Plugge’s Plateau, Russell’s Top and Baby 700.

Units became mixed in the darkness and confusion, yet the advance continued through extraordinary courage and determination.

The ANZAC spirit was being forged in real time.

Lest We Forget.

🌅 ANZAC Timeline | Before Dawn – The Landing Begins (4:00–4:30 AM)

In darkness on 25 April 1915, the first waves of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps approached the Gallipoli coast in rowing boats.

Intending to land near Gaba Tepe, strong currents carried many ashore at what would become known as Anzac Cove.

Before sunrise, Australians and New Zealanders were landing under rifle and machine-gun fire, climbing steep ridges into the unknown.

This was the beginning of a day that would help shape a nation.

Lest We Forget.

🌺 ANZAC Day – Lest We Forget 🌺

Today, ANZAC Day, we pause to honour and remember the courage, sacrifice and mateship of the men and women who have served — and those who continue to serve — in defence of Australia and New Zealand.

ANZAC Day commemorates the landing of the Gallipoli Campaign on 25 April 1915. While the campaign itself was incredibly costly and ultimately unsuccessful militarily, it became a defining moment in Australian history. It was one of the first major actions fought by Australian forces as a young nation, and many regard it as a moment when the Australian identity began to take shape — forged through courage, endurance, sacrifice, and mateship under unimaginable hardship.

The ANZAC spirit born at Gallipoli continues to represent values Australians hold dear: service, resilience, loyalty, compassion and looking out for one another.

At Illawarra Urgent Response, we honour all who have served, those who continue to serve, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Ode
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

Today we remember. Tomorrow we continue to serve.
