Receptive language difficulties are challenges that kids may face in understanding and processing language, such as difficulty following instructions, comprehending complex sentences, or understanding the meanings of words.

These difficulties can sometimes go unnoticed, particularly if children are skilled at masking their struggles.

Kids may use a variety of strategies to mask their receptive language difficulties, such as avoiding situations where they may be required to understand complex language, relying on visual cues or context to understand what is being said, or using memorisation to compensate for poor comprehension.

Kids may mask their receptive language difficulties by appearing to be distracted or disengaged, when in fact they are struggling to understand what is being said. This can be particularly challenging for teachers and caregivers who may interpret this behavior as a lack of interest or motivation, rather than a sign of underlying language difficulties.

It's important to note that masking receptive language difficulties can be exhausting for children, and can impact their self-esteem and confidence. It's crucial for parents, educators, and healthcare professionals to be aware of the signs of receptive language difficulties, and to provide appropriate support and interventions to help kids overcome these challenges.

Most played with toy of the week! I am delighted!

22/08/2021

Today is the start of Speech Pathology Week (22-28 August). The week aims to promote the speech pathology profession and how speech pathologists work with the 1.2 million Australians who have communication disability to ensure that ‘communication is everyone’s right’.

I’ve been so proud to be a member of the first cohort of Australian Speech Paths trained in Restart DCM - a stuttering approach for young children.

Tonight is the last of many looong nights with our trainers in the Netherlands. Looking forward to being able to offer an alternative in stuttering therapy. I must say, this aligns more closely with what I believe about stuttering and how to best address it.

During some tricky speech sound work, I said to my 5yo client “I love how you keep trying”. She looked at me and simply responded “I am persistent!”

How great is that? It’s an affirmation that we all need, but particularly kids with speech and language difficulties.

It’s not failure - it’s persistence. Because often, great things take time.

These birds love our clinic window and visit us (to see their own reflections) nearly every hour. I can’t wait to talk about them with my clients.

The language kids have a direct experience with is so much richer and meaningful to them, making it far easier to retain. The vocab learning opportunities from this feathered friend are huge! Other than the word “BIRD”, what vocab would you model?

SO WHY “ACACIA”?
Luke and I both grew up in regional/rural areas, so trees hold a lot of beauty for us. But trees also symbolise resilience and growth - and this is what I see in my clients and their families, and what I aim towards too!

These were gifted to me by a bunch of very special people. Can’t wait to share them with you.
