Capital Nordic Walking

Capital Nordic Walking Canberra's Capital Nordic Walking prides itself on providing top quality Nordic Walking instruction for all clients.

Canberra’s fully accredited Nordic Walking Specialists helping Canberrans stay active, healthy and connected through Nordic Walking - the most effective and fun form of exercise Nordic Walking is unique: it can provide benefits for everyone, all ages, those with medical problems to the super-fit. The health benefits of Nordic Walking are proven to be significantly greater than regular walking, jog

ging, swimming and cycling. NW uses over 90% of the body's muscles - way more than walking, running and cycling. More muscles means higher heart rate and more calories burnt. Using the poles effectively strengthens upper body (back, shoulders, arms and core muscles) significantly improving posture and lessening the load and strain on feet, ankles, knees and hip joints and mobilises neck and back. Around the world, millions of Nordic Walkers are enjoying the immense health and fitness benefits that this new form of fitness walking provides. Originally developed from the summer training regime of cross-country skiers, Nordic Walking is one of the fastest growing health and fitness activities in the world being used by individuals, personal trainers, health clubs, physiotherapists, doctors and health promoters because it is highly effective, affordable and fun. Kristen Pratt, Founder of CWN, has been actively involved in health and fitness throughout her career. She is a qualified Occupational Therapist and certified Nordic Walking Instructor with Nordic Walking UK, the Nordic Academy and the International Nordic Walking Federation (Australia) (INWA). Kristen holds the following qualifications: B.App.Sc(OT), M.Ed.St, M.BA, M.IntDev’t, Cert III & IV in Fitness. Kristen is committed to continually updating her knowledge. In 2014 Kristen completed an INWA certified ‘Nordic Walking for Parkinson’s disease’ course, in 2015 a Cert III in Personal Training and a Cert IV in Fitness in 2016. At the September 2015 World Nordic Walking Conference in Seville Kristen completed NW Workshops with the 5 World NW Masters, including a series of clinics with Tom Rutlin focused on the Exerstriding NW technique and its applications – particularly for people with mobility challenges. In May 2016 Kristen completed a 2-day workshop with Norman Doidge, M.D. on latest developments in neuroplasticity, including the importance of walking for brain health. Exercise [also] reduces our risk of Parkinson's and dementia, among other diseases.

The secret is out! Even world famous Dr Michael Mosley is convinced, and spreading the word, about what an awesome and supremely effective and superior activity Nordic Walking is! It's his latest "Just One Thing"

This is a really good summary - including some solid research - on the how and why Nordic Walking is simply amazing on so many levels. Spread the word - forward it on!

The only important piece of information about Nordic Walking that Dr Mosley misses is the absolute importance of learning the correct technique from a qualified and experienced Nordic Walking Instructor.

Nordic Walking is considerably more technical than people appreciate - it's a bit like golf that way - looks straightforward and simple when you see people doing it well - but there is a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Learning the correct technique and practicing regularly means you will enjoy and marvel at the many benefits and have fun while doing so! Doing it incorrectly or badly will likely mean you don't enjoy it, won't experience the benefits - and worst case - you could injure yourself.......

The fabulous, very experienced, highly qualified instructors at Capital Nordic Walking are ready to introduce you to this brilliant activity - we have taught well over 3,000 people to Nordic Walk - of all ages and fitness levels - including the super fit and people with health challenges and disabilities including arthritis, Parkinson's, MS, back and neck pain etc.

Nordic Walking makes it so much easier to walk well, further and faster, feel secure and stable, way less load and strain on feet, legs, lower back, improve your posture, and get a total body work out - using over 90% of the body's muscles, compared to only 45-50% when walking without Nordic Walking poles, jogging, running and cycling.

How adding poles to your walk can burn more calories and boost your heart health!

Since the first event in 2009, Coastrek has transformed millions of lives globally. More than 70,000 trekkers have trained and completed Coastrek with friends, improving their own health and wellbeing and raising over $48 million for our charity partners; The Fred Hollows Foundation (2009-2018), Beyond Blue (2018-2022) and from 2023, the Heart Foundation.

Research shows that women are much less likely to undergo treatment for heart attack or angina (chest pain) in hospital compared to men. Heart disease in Australian women is currently under-recognised, under-diagnosed and under-researched. Funds raised in Coastrek will go towards turning this shocking situation around.

We would love to see Canberra’s Nordic Walkers (and others who haven’t yet caught on to the many wonders of Nordic Walking!) take the challenge of joining friends to trek around the lake for fun, fitness, friends and fundraising, all in support of the Heart Foundation.

You can choose between a 30km adventure, or a Twilight 20km that will see your team crossing the finish line at dusk.

The event will start and end at Lennox Gardens on Friday the 15th of March.

Doubly proud that our fabulous, and much loved, CNW Volunteer Coordinators, Jan Lee and Dave Drain, were also recognised - Highly Commended in the ACT Volunteer Manager of the year awards! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Here’s our amazeballs Volunteer Development Guru, Lynn Bloomfield, presenting the award on a gorgeously sunny morning at the botanic gardens.

To note - that while we originally intended to nominate both Dave and Jan for their dedication to coordinating all the volunteers and leading the Tuesday and Thursday walks. Dave’s preference was to focus on just one person (who wasn’t him!) and as a result the certificate and award is in Jan’s name. But we all know that it’s a joint effort, and our thanks and congratulations go to both 🎉🥳💕
