ing exercise after a cancer diagnosis. Founded in 2001, the DAM Busters were the first breast cancer survivor dragon boat club established in metropolitan Melbourne. Today, our club proudly welcomes ALL cancer survivors and their supporters who want to enjoy the camaraderie, fitness, and fun that dragon boating offers. We believe that life after a cancer diagnosis can be full of strength, connection, and joy. Through paddling together, we rebuild confidence, restore health, and celebrate resilience — both on and off the water. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, all ages, and all fitness levels. Whether you’re recovering from treatment, supporting a loved one, or simply seeking a positive and welcoming community, the DAM Busters offer a place where everyone belongs. Dragon boating is more than a sport for us — it’s a symbol of hope, teamwork, and thriving beyond cancer. You‘ll find us on the water twice a week:
* Sunday 8:30am boat & equipment prep and warm up
9:00-10:00am on the water, followed by coffee
* Tuesday 6 :00pm boat & equipment prep and warmup
6:30-7:30pm on the water, followed by dinner

All of our Members are super proud of you and your work ethic Helen, and the results speak for themselves.🥇
A huge shout out also to Amanda Parkinson and Renee Armstrong on your fierce competition over the last week.
A big congrats must go to all the organisers and volunteers who helped make the regatta such a success. One of these was our own Ali Sutton, our Sweep, Coach and Level 3 Official.
Ali officiated as a Water Umpire, an Assist Starter, and an Assist Race Secretary this year.
Amazing 🤩

With the AusChamps underway on the Sunshine Coast this week, three DAM Buster superstars are already making their mark!
Helen, Amanda and Renee are doing us all proud, with gold medals🥇🥇in the ACP 10s - 200 & 500m races. The girls also caught up with our sponsors Z&J SPORT AU at their display.

My name is Merrylynn, and I first came to the DAM Busters back in 2010.

I still say I was truly blessed to have spotted that note on the BCNA website—it’s what led me to this incredible team.

At the beginning, I had all the usual worries: Am I fit enough? Am I a strong enough swimmer? Do I even have the time?

My life was already full—friends, music festivals, weekends away—and it had been years since I’d played any team sport. But the moment I met this wonderful group of people, all those fears faded. They quickly became “my people.” Welcoming, supportive, fun, dedicated… just genuinely good humans.

For me, it’s so much more than dragon boating. It’s a community—a family—brought together by circumstances none of us ever expected. I’ve met people outside my usual circles, people I never would have had the chance to know if I hadn’t joined this team.

We’re also lucky to travel—internationally, regionally, and locally—paddling with even more incredible people from the wider dragon boating community.

We would love to see you down at Docklands, we welcome all survivors and supporters. Many of us travel in from the outer suburbs because being part of this team is worth it.
