Pilates can offer a range of benefits for individuals with lipoedema. While Pilates doesn’t cure lipoedema, it can help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being while contributing to an active lifestyle without triggering pain flare-ups.

Here are the key benefits:

🔹 1. Improved Lymphatic Flow
Pilates encourages gentle, rhythmic movements that can help stimulate lymphatic circulation and reduce fluid build-up.

🔹 2. Reduced Pain and Discomfort
The low-impact nature of Pilates reduces strain on joints and muscles while helping improve muscle balance and alignment, which may reduce discomfort.

🔹 3. Increased Strength and Muscle Tone
Pilates helps strengthen the deep stabilising muscles, especially the core, glutes, and thighs. Building muscle can help support the affected limbs better and improve overall body function without overloading the joints.

🔹 4. Improved Mobility and Flexibility
Pilates emphasises controlled, full-range movements, which can enhance joint mobility and tissue elasticity.

🔹 5. Postural Alignment and Balance
Lipoedema can affect posture and movement patterns due to changes in body shape and discomfort. Pilates trains body awareness and alignment, helping reduce compensatory movements and supporting better posture.

🔹 6. Mental Health and Body Image
Pilates promotes a mind-body connection, reduces stress, and can improve confidence and body awareness in a non-judgmental environment.

We offer clinical Pilates classes of mat and reformer.

Exercise and Lipoedema?

For managing lipoedema, the best exercises are low-impact, lymphatic-stimulating activities that help reduce pain, improve mobility, support circulation, and avoid over-straining the joints.

🏊Swimming / Hydrotherapy
Why: Water supports your weight, reducing joint stress, while providing resistance for muscle tone and lymphatic flow.
Try water aerobics, gentle swimming, or walking laps in a pool.

🚶‍♀️Walking
Why: Promotes circulation and is easy on the joints.

🚴🏻‍♀️Cycling (Stationary or Outdoor)
Why: Low impact and helps build leg strength without putting pressure on joints.

🧘‍♀️Pilates/ yoga
Why: Improves flexibility, posture, and muscle strength.

Tips for Exercising with Lipoedema:
🔵Compression garments during and after exercise may reduce discomfort and swelling.
🔵Always warm up and cool down properly.
🔵Listen to your body, rest if you're in pain or fatigued.

As part of the support and guidance offered by our practitioners, you will receive practical self-management tips for living with lipoedema. Although self-management cannot cure the condition, it can play a key role in easing symptoms, slowing progression, and enhancing overall quality of life 💫

🏃‍♀️ 1. Exercise
Low-impact movement is best.
*Avoid high-impact or overly strenuous activities that can cause pain or bruising.

🥗 2. Nutrition
While lipoedema fat is resistant to diet alone, nutrition still plays a role.
Recommended:
-Focus on whole foods
-Limit sugar, processed foods, and salt – all may exacerbate swelling.
-Stay hydrated: supports lymphatic and metabolic function.
*Consider:Keeping a food diary to monitor what helps or worsens symptoms.

🧦 3. Compression Therapy
Compression garments can reduce pain, swelling, and prevent fluid build up.

🤲 4. Self Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
A gentle massage technique that stimulates lymph flow.
-Some techniques can be self-administered once trained.

🛀 5. Skin Care
-Moisturise daily to prevent dryness and cracking.
-Monitor for infections or skin changes.

🧠 6. Mental Health Support
Lipoedema often leads to emotional distress due to body image, pain, and misdiagnosis.
-Join support groups (online or local).
-Educate yourself and your loved ones to reduce stigma.

🩺 7. Monitoring and Tracking
-Take regular photos and measurements to track progression.
-Keep a symptom diary – note pain, swelling, diet, exercise, and energy levels.

Early diagnosis of lipoedema is essential to stop progression, reduce complications, avoid misdiagnosis, and improve patient outcomes. It leads to more effective, personalised care and offers patients a greater chance of maintaining a good quality of life.

Early symptoms typically appear during hormonal changes. Key indicators include:
🔵Symmetrical fat accumulation - on the legs and sometimes arms, sparing the hands and feet.
🔵Pain or tenderness in the fat-affected areas, even when lightly touched.
🔵Easy bruising without significant trauma.
🔵Cold, soft, and doughy skin texture in affected areas.
🔵Disproportion between upper and lower body - often with a narrow waist and wide hips/legs.
🔵Minimal response to diet or exercise

Lipoedema is best diagnosed by a healthcare provider experienced in the condition such as a lymphoedema/ lipoedema therapist or a GP who has knowledge about this condition 💫

💙 June is Lipoedema awareness month 💜

Lipoedema affects at least 11% of women.
Awareness for this condition is VERY important as it is often misdiagnosed or mistaken for lymphoedema or obesity, meaning a number of cases go undiagnosed.

We are raising our voice to help shape the future of lipoedema care
