🐴 Is Equine Assisted Therapy still funded by NDIS?
Yes. It is.
There’s been a lot of confusion about animal/equine‑based therapies. Many people were told they’re no longer funded. That’s not correct.
NDIS still funds Equine Assisted Therapy when it’s delivered by a qualified therapist and meets a participant’s goals.
At Arrow Equine Assisted Therapy & Counselling, sessions are run by trained professionals who use horses as part of a structured, therapeutic approach. This means our services can be considered under NDIS therapeutic supports when they meet “reasonable and necessary” criteria.
Programs run by people without formal therapy qualifications may still be funded, but only under categories like Innovative Community Participation, not therapy supports.
If you’re unsure what applies to you or someone you support, we’re here to help.
Send us a message or reach out to learn how equine therapy can fit into an NDIS plan.

It was an absolute privilege to partner with the Orana Youth Justice Centre and their dedicated psychology team. We are so proud of the young people who leaned into this experience and showed such courage in their personal growth.
Over the seven days, we focused on our EPI Horse Wisdom Program, which provides a safe space for participants to explore:

Self-Regulation: Learning to find a calm state and notice when they are becoming activated.
Awareness/noticing: Horses are always aware of what is happening in their environment, within their bodies and with their feelings as a way of keeping safe, learning how to be more like them, learning to notice and respond in ways that help keep us safe.

Boundaries: Understanding their personal 'yes' and 'no' through respectful interaction with the horses.
Healthy Relationships: Developing trust and practicing two-way communication without the pressure of a traditional 'talk' setting.
Kind/helpful thoughts/talk: Noticing how thoughts directly affect the horse’s response in real-time and how they affect us and others around us.

Feelings: How we can use and experience our feelings.

Facing Life’s Challenges: How we can use the skills learned to better celebrate the good and manage the harder times.
Seeing these young people develop relationships with our Equine and K9 team, build skills and awareness and 'move forward with direction' is exactly why we do what we do. Thank you for having us! 🐴🐾✨"
If you’d like to explore a tailored program for your group, community organisation or service, or enquire about individual sessions, we would love to chat.

Did you know our Youth Justice Centres run equine therapy programs? 🐎

Equine therapy involves guided activities with horses to help young people build confidence, manage emotions and practice respectful communication.

Last October, young people at Orana Youth Justice Centre took part in a 7 day program delivered by Arrow Equine Therapy & Counselling.

With support from the Orana Psychology team, young people cared for and worked alongside horses while learning skills they could use in everyday life.

Arrow Equine Assisted Therapy & Counselling is proud to have delivered an incredibly successful 7-day EPI Horse Wisdom Program to young people in custody at Orana Youth Justice Centre.

With the help of our amazing team—three horses Smoke, Isabelle, and Arrow, and our loyal kelpie Chunk—participants experienced powerful moments of connection, trust, confidence, and growth.

Watching these young people have these experiences was amazing to watch and be part of.🐴🐾

✨ Growth & Healing through safe relationships & tailored evidence based therapy. Moving forward with Direction.

Evidence of how horses change the way our brain works.

Can horses change how our brains work?
Using a brain-imaging cap, researchers found that veterans working with horses showed increase in brain activity and focus. Safe, real-time science that supports what horse lovers already know.

As the founder and counsellor of Arrow Equine Assisted Therapy & Counselling you will see me here in my jeans, boots and cowboy hat, but you may not know that I divide my time between Arrow Equine Assisted Therapy & Counselling and my role with the Royal Flying Doctor Service bringing Alcohol and other Drug Counselling to rural and remote locations. Both roles mean so much to me and I feel incredibly lucky that I get to share my time with the 2 roles.
