📢 Have your say on the future of general practice standards

The RACGP Expert Committee – Standards for General Practices (REC-SGP) has released the second draft of the sixth edition of the Standards for general practices for public consultation.

This updated draft reflects feedback from GPs, practice teams and stakeholders, alongside evidence reviews and recommendations from national health system reviews.

🔑 What’s new in this draft?
• Environmental sustainability in practice operations
• Safe adoption of digital health technologies and AI
• Stronger requirements for privacy and confidentiality
• Antimicrobial stewardship through education and prescribing support
• Enhanced quality improvement, including consumer engagement and clinical data

The Standards also introduce new consumer expectation statements, ensuring patients’ needs and perspectives are embedded in practice systems.

👉 Find out more, review the draft Standards, and provide feedback here: http://bit.ly/4g85y7u

It’s National Diabetes Week—a timely reminder of the vital role GPs play in preventing, diagnosing, and managing diabetes.

This year’s focus is on prevention. GPs are often the first to identify those at risk and can help prevent complications with early action. Now’s a good time to check recall systems and keep prevention top of mind, especially for those over 55, with a family history, or from higher-risk groups.

Diabetes links closely with other conditions like chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. Early assessment and intervention are essential.

Excellent, free evidence-based programs are available across Australia to support healthy lifestyle changes, plus practical tools in the RACGP Diabetes Handbook and Red Book for GPs.

Find prevention programs here: https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/prevention-programs

Let’s keep diabetes prevention and care at the heart of general practice—your work makes a real difference.
