🌿 Community Care & Safety During Extreme Weather 🌿
Today’s heat and fire conditions can feel overwhelming — especially for children, people with disability, those living with trauma, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or anyone already feeling stretched.
At New Light Disability & Counselling, we want you to know: 🤍 Your worry makes sense
🤍 Your body’s stress response is valid
🤍 You are not weak for feeling unsettled — you are human
Gentle Safety & Wellbeing Tips
• Stay indoors where possible, close windows & curtains early
• Keep hydrated — small, regular sips help regulate the nervous system
• Use fans, cool cloths, or foot soaks to manage body temperature
• Reduce sensory overload (dim lights, quiet spaces, calming music)
• Check in on neighbours, elderly family, and those living alone
• If you have a pool or dam accessible, clearly mark it for emergency services if safe to do so
For emotional regulation today
• Slow breathing (in for 4, out for 6)
• Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear
• Limit doom-scrolling — check updates at set times only
If you or someone you support becomes overwhelmed It’s okay to pause plans, cancel non-essential travel, and prioritise safety. Emotional safety matters just as much as physical safety.
