Without blowing my own horn too much, I often get asked how I look so young for my age. The answer is no doubt a blend of diet and lifestyle choices as well as genetics but I strongly believe my large intake of collagen through home made bone broth, nose-to-tail eating and collagen powder is partly responsible.

You don't have to go very far down an internet rabbit hole to find support for the benefits of collagen consumption not just on skin, bones and joints but more importantly your gut. And your gut, being your second brain is responsible for more than we know, particularly with regards to mental health.

Neurotransmitters responsible for mood are made in the gut by your gut bacteria so you want to look after the gut environment so your bacteria can thrive which means you thrive.

Making your own bone broth is super easy and much cheaper than buying it from the shop. If you would like my recipe and method shoot me a message and I can send it through.

Yes,
You are strong enough to survive this.
I know it seems like your world is over and maybe you can’t find the light right now, but hang in there.
I know your soul is weary and you feel like you can’t keep going, but don’t stop.
Your happiness may seem so far away, but it’s not as far as you might think.
Yes, the nights can be long and you don’t have any answers, but you don’t have to.
Breathe.
Take a moment and remember what all you’ve survived before now.
You’ve been through the fire and always found your way..your courage has been forged in the flames that tried to take you down.
Remember that- you’re a warrior who will continue to rise again.
It’s time to find your magic again and listen to your heart.
It knows the way, but you’ve gotten so weary that you’ve lost the path.
If you’ve lost faith in yourself and your strength is waning, know that you’re not alone.
You’re loved, you’re enough and I believe in you.
It’s always darkest before dawn and this is your time to start again.
Every end is a new beginning and your next chapter will be magical..
You just have to start believing in you like I do.
Like all the people in your life do.
I know you’re reading this and wondering how you’ll make it through this, I’m telling you..
You got this.
You are meant for more than to simply fizzle out like a dampened flicker of light.
You’re a wildfire capable of setting your soul and life on fire again.
Take my hand and let’s start climbing out of the darkness, day by day.
I know you’ve been looking for a sign, something to believe in..
Well, this is it.
Today is your wake up call and this is where you start again- you’re strong enough and you’re worth it.
It won’t be easy and it won’t be fast, but it will change your life if you’re ready.
These words were meant for you.
Are you ready to start again?
Believe, darling..in you, your destiny and most of all, in that you are meant for more.
Beginning today..get up, step up and start remembering the magic and dreams you lost along the way.
Anything’s possible if you just believe..
And I believe in you.❤️

The trouble is, you think you have time - Buddha

There is nothing quite like death for getting us to question life, ourselves, our priorities. The recent tragic death of Simon Nellist who was killed by a shark doing something my partner and I do near every day has made me reflect a lot this week.

I've empathised with his partner who I'm sure said goodbye to him before he went for his last swim, not knowing that would be the last time she would see the love of her life. I've thought about his parents, all the way in England who would never have thought that the last time they spoke on Zoom would be the last time. Simon’s work colleagues, mates, and all the people he touched in his life who weren’t expecting not to see him again.

I've thought and reflected on:

❤️If I was to die today, what would I be annoyed that I didn't do or achieve?
❤️Would my closest friends know how much I loved them?
❤️Did I tell them that at all or enough?
❤️Did they know they made a difference in my life?
❤️If my partner never came home from work today would I feel like I told him I loved him enough?
❤️Did I show him that enough?
❤️Would I regret not spending enough quality time with him?

The average person lives 78 years. We spent 28.3 years of our life sleeping. That’s almost a third of our life. We spend 10.5 years of our life working (but over 50% of us want to leave our current jobs). We spend 9 years on T.V and social media. We spend 6 years doing chores. We spend 4 years eating and drinking. We spend 3.5 years in education. We spend 2.5 years grooming. We spend 2.5 years shopping. We spend 1.5 years in child care and we spend 1.3 years commuting.

That leaves us with 9 years. How will you spend that time?

I’ve thought about Simon every morning at the beach this week. He has given me a reminder that life is short. That we never know when our time is up and that life is a privilege. He has given me an opportunity to reflect on myself and my life and to change my behaviour and priorities.

P E R I O D P A I N - if you were lucky enough to be born with female “equipment” you will likely have experienced period pain or discomfort at some stage in your life.

One of the symptoms of my Burnout was intense period pain. My body was in a very inflamed state due to stress which caused many physical symptoms including period pain. I consumed so much Neurophen every month it wasn’t even funny!

Since I have recovered from Burnout my period pain is about 10% of what it used to be or non existent most months. I now treat it not with pharmaceuticals but with my amazingly potent little essential oils - lavender & peppermint oil. And they work a treat!

Lavender oil has a long history of acting as an analgesic (pain reliever) when inhaled or applied topically. It has worked to sooth my period pain too.

How does it work?

❤️PMS cramps are caused by prostaglandins, hormones that create contractions in the uterus.
❤️Prostaglandin hormones also create inflammation in the pelvic area. This can lead to sensations of soreness, bloating, and other secondary effects along with the cramping.
❤️Lavender oil is highly anti-inflammatory. That means it may help to clear inflammation and diminish soreness.

Peppermint essential oil has been really effective in relieving headaches and cramping muscles for me so I experimented with it for period pain and it is awesome!! Peppermint oil is famous for its cooling properties. When I apply it topically it creates a cool sensation which for me, masks the period pain.

Young Living oils are so potent that I only use 1 drop of lavender oil and one drop of peppermint oil and massage it across my lower abdomen. Give it 5 mins and it works a treat!

If you would like to be connected to Young Living send me a DM and I can sort you out!

P E P P E R M I N T O I L - Step aside morning coffee, there is a new “pick me up” in town! Well, it’s not exactly new. Peppermint oil is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing many ailments.

Before I start work or dial into a meeting I put 1 drop on my hands, rub them together and inhale. It’s invigorating and refreshing, provides me with mental clarity and a sense of peace. I love it!
I also use it for headaches (good-bye neurophen) and I put it into my home made chocolate, ice cream and tea.

If you would like to be connected to these wonderful oils DM me and I can set up a wholesale account for you. They have been life changing for me. I love them!

If you are not aware, these are some of the OGX shampoos that Johnson & Johnson is being sued over. They have a chemical called DMDM hydantoin, which is a base component in formaldehyde. It can cause scalp irritation and hair loss as well as being a known carcinogen.

*Here are the shampoos and conditioners and to clarify what DMDM hydantoin does. It is a preservative known to slowly leach formaldehyde when it comes into contact with water

How to do a hens sober! I've just been to a hens weekend and had the most fabulous time! It didn't matter one bit that I didn't drink. I was lucky enough to have the support of a friend who is also enjoying an alcohol free life which made things even better!

🦋Make sure the organiser gets you something you like to drink. People are happy to accomodate you but make it easy for them. Im extra "difficult" because I also don't drink refined sugar (soft drinks). Make it easy by giving them specific instructions.
🦋Participate in the cocktail making! You don't have to have alcohol in a cocktail! In this pic you can see us drinking a margarita in a martini glass, with dehydrated limes and Mexican spiced salt around the rim. No one would even know the difference!
🦋Keep a drink in your hand the whole time so you can still mirror others (we do this unconsciously) so there is no awkward feelings for you or your friends.
🦋Try to remember that after everyone has had one or two drinks, they wont even remember you aren't drinking. So don't feel anxious about that. Relax.
🦋When people ask why you don’t drink, think of a response that doesn’t make them feel bad about themselves. I know this is ridiculous but it’s just easier to not be a buzz kill. “I just feel better when I don't drink” and then change the subject.
🦋Ask for the bedroom furthest away from the action so you can go to bed when it starts to get messy.
🦋Enjoy feeling smug when you wake up to do yoga bright and early and everyone else is feeling awful 😂

If you are thinking of trying an alcohol free life, the best advice I can give is to prepare/plan before you go out. Think about what drink you are going to order, have a drink in your hand at all times, what you are going to say when people ask why you aren't drinking and who will be an ally and not give you too much grief - sit with them. It gets way easier the more you do it, trust me!

How on Earth could naming the emotions you are feeling possibly help provide relief? Here is the science..

Your amygdala is the part of your brain that triggers an emotional response, particularly fear and anger. When you are having an emotional response the amygdala shows an increase in activity. Studies have shown that when we start to name the emotion and put some cognition behind it, there is a decreased response in the amygdala and an increase in brain activity in the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is involved with inhibiting behaviour and processing emotions. When you put feelings into words you seem to hit the brakes on the emotional response.

So next time you are feeling down, sad or anxious, or even if you don't know what you are feeling, you just know you don't like feeling the way you are feeling, do this activity:

1. Ask yourself if you are feeling low energy or low mood, or both.

Low energy:

Have you met your basic needs today/recently (sleep, water, nutrient dense food, movement, support, connection, rest). Often low energy caused by hunger, lack of rest or lack of movement for example can lead to low mood.

Low mood:

What am I feeling right now?
Identify an emotion (or 2 or 3!). The emotion wheel is often a great help if you need help describing certain feelings. Start by identifying one of the core emotions in the middle, then work your way outside of the circle, that’s where you’ll find what’s likely beneath that emotion.

Where in my body can I feel this?
Stomach, chest, heart? Get into your body and see if you can feel it anywhere in particular. This might seem weird at first but checking in with your body takes you out of your head.

What is the telling me?
We feel emotions for a reason. They’re there to give us all the info we need.

What do I need?
What need(s) are unmet? Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Have I met my basic needs today (sleep, water, food, exercise, support, connection, rest).

How can I meet those needs?
Can I meet any of those needs right now? Can I plan to sometime later? What may need to be added or removed from my life in order to take care of myself?

And this my friends is why we have a problem with Burnout and stress induced modern disease. We were not designed to have so much stress in our lives, such minimal down time.

There are many types of stress, most of which our ancestors didn't have, and they are all interconnected and they are cumulative.

🤯Emotional Stressors - Include things that make you sad, angry or just ruminating on things
🤯Physical Stressors - Include over-exercise, sleep deprivation, dehydration, drinking/smoking
🤯Environmental Stressors - Things like light (lack of or too much, or flickering), noise (noises in the office, air conditioning, traffic), snoring spouse or pet, temperature, sight of clutter, electromagnetic fields (towers, phones, bluetooth)
🤯Social Stressors - Christmas, work parties, family, dates, conflictual interactions (workplace or home)
🤯Cognitive Stressors - Decision making, problem-solving, interpreting things, deadlines, expectations.

We often experience many of these at once. Think of your day today, how many have you experienced?

Any of these things in isolation are likely not going to cause any trouble but so many at the same time.. You’ve heard the saying the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Conduct a life balance audit and you might discover why you are feeling the way you are feeling. Try and incorporate activities that calm your nervous system - massage, restorative yoga, meditation (even just 10 mins), time in nature, walking, stretching, gardening, whatever brings you joy and calm.

It might not be possible to get life to 50/50 but you can start with incorporating relaxation and restoration, even if for only a few minutes, every day.
