And this my friends is why we have a problem with Burnout and stress induced modern disease. We were not designed to have so much stress in our lives, such minimal down time.
There are many types of stress, most of which our ancestors didn't have, and they are all interconnected and they are cumulative.
🤯Emotional Stressors - Include things that make you sad, angry or just ruminating on things
🤯Physical Stressors - Include over-exercise, sleep deprivation, dehydration, drinking/smoking
🤯Environmental Stressors - Things like light (lack of or too much, or flickering), noise (noises in the office, air conditioning, traffic), snoring spouse or pet, temperature, sight of clutter, electromagnetic fields (towers, phones, bluetooth)
🤯Social Stressors - Christmas, work parties, family, dates, conflictual interactions (workplace or home)
🤯Cognitive Stressors - Decision making, problem-solving, interpreting things, deadlines, expectations.
We often experience many of these at once. Think of your day today, how many have you experienced?
Any of these things in isolation are likely not going to cause any trouble but so many at the same time.. You’ve heard the saying the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Conduct a life balance audit and you might discover why you are feeling the way you are feeling. Try and incorporate activities that calm your nervous system - massage, restorative yoga, meditation (even just 10 mins), time in nature, walking, stretching, gardening, whatever brings you joy and calm.
It might not be possible to get life to 50/50 but you can start with incorporating relaxation and restoration, even if for only a few minutes, every day.
