Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) is one of the most common forms of skin cancer.

It often develops in sun-damaged skin and may appear as:
• A sore that doesn’t heal
• A crusted or scaly patch
• A tender or growing lesion

Because it can resemble a persistent wound or irritated spot, many people ignore it for too long.

The good news:
When detected early, SCC is usually very treatable.
The important part is recognising when a spot isn’t behaving normally anymore.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer.

It often grows slowly and may cause little to no pain, which is why many people ignore it for months or even years.

BCC can appear as:
• A pearly bump
• A shiny pink patch
• A sore that won’t heal
• A scar-like area

While it rarely spreads to distant parts of the body, it can continue growing into nearby skin and tissue if left untreated.

Slow-growing doesn’t mean harmless.

Skin cancer is not one single disease.

The three main types, BCC, SCC, and melanoma, can look different, behave differently, and carry very different levels of risk.

Some grow slowly over years. Others can become dangerous much faster if missed.

One important reminder:
Melanoma doesn’t always appear dark or obvious. Some types can be pink, skin-coloured, or simply evolve over time.

Understanding the differences helps people recognise when a skin change deserves attention.

One of the biggest barriers to skin cancer treatment is fear of the unknown.

Many people imagine major surgery, long recovery, or permanent disruption to daily life.

But when detected early, treatment is often far simpler than expected, commonly involving small procedures performed under local anaesthetic, often completed in a single visit.

The goal is not to wait until it becomes serious.
It’s to catch it early, while treatment is simpler and outcomes are better.

Not every wound can be closed the same way.

A skin flap uses nearby skin and tissue, while keeping its own blood supply to help close deeper or more complex wounds.

These techniques are often used when:
• The wound is larger or deeper
• Simple closure isn’t suitable
• Areas like the nose, eyelids, or ears need careful reconstruction

The goal is not just healing, but preserving function and structure where it matters most.

Sometimes a wound can’t be closed with stitches alone.

A skin graft involves taking healthy skin from one area of the body and placing it over the wound to help it heal properly.

It’s often used when:
• The wound is too large to close directly
• There isn’t enough nearby skin for a flap
• The area needs support to heal and regain shape

It can improve healing and outcomes, but it also involves a second site and a longer recovery.

Removing a skin cancer is only the first step — closing the wound properly is just as important.

There are different ways to close a wound after excision, including:
• Primary closure (straight line closure)
• Skin flap repair (using nearby skin)
• Skin graft (using skin from another area)

The goal is always the same:
• Support healing
• Minimise scarring
• Preserve natural form and function

The best method depends on the size, location, and complexity of the wound.
